Celebrating Our Veterinary Technicians — Especially Sarah Ostrin, Our 2026 John Sherman Award Recipient!

Dear Colleagues,

The week of October 18-24, 2026 celebrates National Veterinary Technician Week. This year’s theme is Credentialed Veterinary Technicians: Endless Compassion, Expert Care; Celebrating the Soul of Veterinary Medicine. This couldn’t be more well said. Our veterinary technicians are the soul and foundation of veterinary medicine, and I want to say Thank You to each and every one of you for all that you do. A week just isn’t enough time to celebrate your achievements and necessity in this medical field, especially in physical rehabilitation.

We of the AARV board are proud to celebrate and recognize Sarah Ostrin as the 2026 John Sherman Award Recipient. Her career achievements have transformed the role of the veterinary technician in physical rehabilitation, and she is most deserving of this honor in our field. Please join us in congratulating Sarah during the 2026 AARV Fall Virtual Continuing Education Event on Saturday, October 17th. Registration is open through October 10th. I look forward to seeing you there!

With much gratitude,

Celebrating Sarah Ostrin: Our 2026 John Sherman Award Recipient and a Champion for Rehabilitation Technicians

by Nancy Couillard, RVT, CCRTech, VTS (Phys. Rehab), COCM, CCMT

Technician Liaison

The AARV is proud to celebrate Sarah Ostrin, MSCR, BS, CVT, VTS (Physical Rehabilitation), CCRP, as the recipient of the 2026 John Sherman Award, sponsored by Paw Prosper. This recognition is a wonderful reflection of Sarah’s years of dedication to veterinary rehabilitation, education, leadership, and advocacy for veterinary technicians.

Sarah has been an integral part of the rehabilitation community for many years, with extensive clinical experience, teaching and mentoring, research involvement, and professional leadership. Through her involvement with both the APRVT and AARV, Sarah has consistently worked to strengthen opportunities for technicians and promote their important role within the veterinary rehabilitation team. Her contributions to education, research, professional organizations, and mentorship have helped shape the growing role of rehabilitation technicians within our profession.

Paw Prosper logo

Sarah’s commitment to education and technician advancement continues today. Most recently, she helped organize the technician track at the 2026 ACVSMR Symposium, where she presented multiple lectures and participated in a panel addressing rehabilitation education and the VTS pathway.

On a more personal note, Sarah and I share a special connection in our professional journeys—we earned our VTS in Physical Rehabilitation at the same time. It has been incredibly rewarding to watch her continue to grow as a clinician, educator, leader, and advocate. Sarah is not only an accomplished rehabilitation technician; she is a phenomenal person who genuinely believes in supporting and elevating those who follow in her footsteps.

Congratulations, Sarah, on this very well-deserved recognition. The rehabilitation community—and the veterinary technician profession as a whole—is fortunate to have you as an advocate, mentor, and colleague.

Our thanks to Paw Prosper for their sponsorship of the John Sherman Award. We are grateful for your support!

The American Association of Rehabilitation Veterinarians (AARV) strives to improve animal physical rehabilitation through clinical research and collaboration within and outside the Association. Thus, the AARV has established a competitive annual awards program. The purpose of this program is to add to the evidence base for veterinary rehabilitation by providing grant funds to highly meritorious applications. We encourage individuals to submit grant proposals that advance the science of canine and/or equine rehabilitation.

To learn more about grant opportunities, members may log in to the AARV website and visit the Grant Opportunities web page in the Members Area, or click on the links below to find out more information about the different types of grants currently offered:
