BLACK WOMEN'S EQUAL PAY DAY IS AUGUST 3rd
Black women have to work, from the start of 2020 through August 2021, to earn as much as White men earned in 2020 alone. In dollars and cents, Black women earn 62 cents for every one dollar full-time, year-round White men workers earn.

2021 SPRING MATCHING CHALLENGE MET AND SURPASSED!
In support of our continued fight for equity, our branch members surpassed our Marin Spring Matching Challenge goal of $5,000 by $400. To recognize this strong commitment, our five Marin Branch Angels increased their match by $400 for a grand total of $10,800!
Donations to the Greatest Needs Fund gives AAUW the flexibility to use the dollars where it is most needed. Thank you to everyone who donated to support AAUW’s mission to “advance equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy.” If you missed the match, it is never too late to donate to the Greatest Needs Fund. Along with the names of our generous 52 donors, directions for donating are on the AAUW Fund page under “Philanthropy” on our Marin website.

A Good time was had by all at our Summer Flings
Four members hosted our “summer flings” in their respective backyards. Each gathering had about eight members who all enjoyed being with each other outside and unmasked. Thanks to Lorraine Voskanian, Joy Phoenix, Chris O’Neill and Leslie Murphy for serving as hostesses.

AUGUST:
Sip and Sup
In person at Jason's
August 17, 4-6 pm
|
|
Join us Tuesday, August 17 from 4-6 pm at Jason’s in Greenbrae for some outdoor mingling, munching and sipping with your AAUW friends. Cost is $15 per person, which covers one glass of wine or Pellegrino, plus a sampling of pizzas and Jason’s famous “healthy fries”. Additional wine or other beverage can be purchased separately at the event. The $15 is payable at the door, but we really would appreciate an RSVP so we know how many to plan for. Please RSVP by August 12 to [email protected]. We have to confirm food and drink orders with the restaurant the Friday before this event. A separate invite will also be sent later this week or early next week. This is a great event to invite prospective members to attend! Masks are fine, but not required if you are fully vaccinated as we will be outside.
If you’d like to stay for a non-sponsored dinner afterwards, please let us know that when you RSVP and we will reserve a table.

Our September meeting will be via Zoom-- September 11, at 11:00. This will be our fall kick-off with the 20 (!) girls we sent to AAUW-CA’s Virtual Tech Trek camp this summer. Come meet the girls virtually and also hear tales from the three AAUW Marin branch members who participated as instructors: Dottie Burk, Amy Anderson and Dianne Sheridan. More about this program in the next newsletter.

We are all saddened to hear that AAUW CEO Kim Churches recently announced her resignation, effective October 1. Kim has been instrumental in getting us back on track financially and strategically and helping to position us for the future. The Board now has the difficult task of finding her replacement. Stay tuned!
Kim is leaving AAUW to become the CEO of the The Washington Center, an organization that provides immersive internships and academic seminars for college students and graduates from around the world to help them bridge from academic studies to career building. It’s a great opportunity for her, even though we are really sad to lose her!
Meanwhile, AAUW just issued a supplement to The Simple Truth, our well-known report on the gender pay gap, to highlight the impact of racism on the earning power of women of color. Black women’s Equal Pay Day is August 3rd because of this long term impact on the earnings of Black Women, meaning it takes the typical Black woman 19 months to be paid what the average white man takes home in 12 months. You can read the report and the update here. The Simple Truth about the Pay Gap (aauw.org)

Become more involved in local AAUW! Make new friends!
There are still two openings on the AAUW Marin Branch Board. If either of these positions piques your curiosity, let me know.
Social Media: This requires keeping our presence on social media current. It does not mean you necessarily need to know all about the different platforms, but that you are willing to learn and then keep postings lively and up to date.
Photographer: Now that we will be having some in person gatherings there is a need for someone who likes taking pictures, both candid and posed, of our events. Photos will not only document our activities, but will be posted on our website, in our newsletter and on social media .
The board is having a planning meeting/mini-retreat in mid-August. Let me know before then if you want to take a more active part in helping our branch support the mission of AAUW.

|
Our branch is also looking for someone to help us move our invitations to Constant Contact from Paperless post and enable prepayment for events. If anyone has a desire to help or knowledge of the subject.
