Highlights From January Activities
Meeting with Marc Levine
On January 10th Nancy Lubamersky, Cherie Sorokin and Dale Satake met with Marc Levine.

The meeting went well and Mr. Levine was receptive and interested in the message. He did know about AAUW, but said he was happy to have further context and information. Members spoke about AAUW’s mission and accomplishments on a national level, AAUW's advocacy efforts in California, and it's particular interest as an organization in pay equity and economic security for women. Members also alerted him to the Branch's local efforts with Tech Trek and in raising funds for local scholarships at College of Marin and Dominican. Information on both AAUW, the state lobbying efforts and AAUW Marin was left with his legislative aid.
January Behind the Headlines
K ate Sears, Marin County Supervisor came to Behind the Headlines group in January.
She spoke to AAUW Marin members about her life journey and her time and accomplishments while on the Marin County Board.

Katherine Brinnier
I joined AAUW Marin in December 2007. In 2009 I became the Program Chair and held that position until 2019 at which time I became the Program Admin person. Teaching is the thing I am most passionate about. I have been a teacher for over 50 years in various venues from a middle school general music teacher and choral director in New York and Connecticut then a corporate trainer and operations manager for Fireman’s Fund Insurance Co. to an English as a Second Language ( ESL) teacher.
I have studied various languages in high school and college and studied Spanish in Mexico. I am still
studying Spanish. I have been an ESL teacher for 20 years. I currently teach at Whistlestop. I love curriculum design and development and am now developing ESL curriculum that enriches the aging brain and promotes brain health.

I live in Los Robles
Mobile Home Park where I organize and put on 4-5 holiday dinners for 60-80 people. I love playing Mah Jongg and have taught a number of people how to play. I am an avid cat lover, having had 9 in my life, each one a mysterious, magical gift. I love all kinds of music, enjoy theater, movies, TV and a good book. Teaching has been the most rewarding experience of my life and I am still in touch with many of my students, going back to the 1960’s when I was teaching music and including many of my ESL learners.
NATIONAL NEWS
2020 AAUW Convening Series
I n a plan to reach as many AAUW members across the country AAUW National is replacing the National Convention with a series of online webinars. These will feature national leadership and special guests on important mission-driven topics. The first of these was held on January 28, featuring AAUW's plans for 2020.
You may view this now by clicking the link.
T here is another webinar planned for April 14. Mark your calendars and participate.

There will also be more webinars, website features, and newsletters celebrating and recognizing the and accomplishments and experiences of AAUW members.
Please help us fund the critical research and advocacy that AAUW National works so hard on to promote gender equity, AND this counts towards our branch winning our Five Stars! Let's be the first branch to get all five.
AAUW LEGACY CIRCLE
Become a member of the AAUW Legacy Circle by making a planned gift to AAUW. The gift will affirm your commitment to expanding AAUW programs and public policy agenda the future of women and girls. 5 Issues We’re Watching in 2020

AAUW will be watching closely to see where candidates stand on these five issues:
  1. Equal Pay for Equal Work. To close the stubborn wage gap, we need leaders who will pass the federal Paycheck Fairness Act and advocate for laws and policies that ensure women are not discriminated against at work.
  2. Investing in Education. Education is the pathway for women and girls, but too many of our schools are falling short. We need to raise teacher pay, invest in STEM education, protect Title IX and make education a top national priority.
  3. Reducing Student Debt. Women hold two-thirds of the nation’s $1.46 trillion educational debt. Policymakers should protect grant programs, champion tuition and debt-free options and expand loan forgiveness programs.
  4. Strengthening Social Security. Because of lower wages and time off from work, women collect about $320 a month less than men do in Social Security benefits. Our lawmakers need to address the retirement wage gap women face.
  5. Implementing Paid Leave. The U.S. is the only developed country without paid family and sick leave. Let’s adopt policies to give workers paid time off for illness and care giving.
