New Member Spotlight

SAY HELLO TO MARJORIE HENNESSY!

Our newest member is Marjorie Hennessy.  She came to us through membership in the Booklovers interest group. Marjorie grew up in Berkeley. She ventured East to Stephens College, majoring in fashion design. When she came back to Berkeley, she attended UC Berkeley, stopping her education for a few years to get married and start a family, but eventually completing her BA in social sciences. Marjorie and her then-husband decided to move to Hawaii for a few years, which turned into 40 years. She loved living there and working as a manufacturer’s representative for cardiovascular products and she still maintains a home in Hawaii, spending a few months a year there. She relocated to the Bay Area to be closer to children and grandchildren, as so many of our members do. She is interested in checking out many of the other interest groups and we hope she’ll have an opportunity to get to know many of you.

Dear Members,

Our 2021-2022 year has come to an end. In May we celebrated the 90th birthday of the Marin branch of AAUW! While providing a way for members to participate in activities from social to educational, the Marin branch has not lost sign of the main mission of AAUW: "To advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy."

One way we support the mission is through giving. In 2021, the Marin branch was the second largest California donor. Locally we raised $18,500 for our Scholarship Fund awarded to Dominican and College of Marin students, along with Tech Trek scholarships, NCCWSL Scholarships and STEM awards for College of Marin women. We also were able to add $3800 to our two college endowments.

Other highlights of the year include the start of a Tech Trek Alumnae Group (TTAG) by Melanie Chancellor and Angela Nuckles. Cherie Sorokin and Dottie Burk participated in Lobby Week, meeting with Senator Mike McGuire. During the last two years, our membership increased by 12 new members. Members attended many stimulating programs thanks to our program chair, Cherie Sorokin. She promises another year of the same, so be on the lookout for these special events. Be sure to view our year in review on our website: Year in Review.

I would like to extend my thanks to all Board members who worked for AAUW Marin this past year. A special thanks to Angela Nuckles (Local Scholarship Chair), Dale Satake (AAUW Fund Chair) and Jane Winter (Public Policy Chair) who will be giving up their positions. Thanks especially to Sherene Chen who was kind enough to take on the job of Newsletter Editor once again in 2021-2022. This job, which is essential to our Branch communication, remains ope

Thank you to all of you for continuing to support our mission. I'm looking forward to seeing you in the near future.  - Dianne
