Get To Know A Board Member
Dottie Burk
When I was in college at the University of New Hampshire I was surprised and delighted to receive a scholarship from the local Mountainside New Jersey AAUW branch. I remembered this and years later I decided to join AAUW and continue the tradition. I have been a member since 1997 and have held several branch board positions including president. I’m currently serving as Scholarship Chair and Secretary of the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund. I remain a member of AAUW Marin for two main reasons. First and foremost is a continued belief in AAUW’s mission of advancing gender equity and, second, because of the friendships I have made, and the fun and intellectual stimulation provided by the interest groups.
Most of my professional life has been as a faculty member of the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry where I have taught all aspects of anatomy to dental students for over 40 years. My PhD training at the University of Michigan was in developmental biology and for over half of my career I was an active researcher in the field of birth defects.
Later in my career, after completing an MA in Educational and Counseling Psychology, my focus switched to the area of educational research. I plan to retire in May.
On the personal side, I was born and raised in the Philadelphia area and when I was in college my family moved to northern New Jersey. After grad school, and a research fellowship I migrated to the Bay area in 1979. Shortly thereafter I met and married my husband, Ken Harrison, and we have lived in Strawberry ever since. I enjoy Jazzercize, yoga, walking, and puzzles and I participate in many of AAUW Marin’s interest groups.
NATIONAL NEWS
AAUW National Webinars
The 2020 Convening Series

In a plan to reach as many AAUW members across the country as possible AAUW National is replacing the National Convention with a series of online webinars. These will feature national leadership and special guests on important mission-driven topics,
The inaugural webinar held on January 28, 2020 focused on the Gender Agenda sharing great information about what AAUW is doing to advance equity for women and girls across the country.
The next webinar is planned for April 14. Mark your calendars and join in.
Please help us fund the critical research and advocacy that AAUW National works so hard on to promote gender equity, AND this counts towards our branch winning our Five Stars! Let's be the first branch to get all five.
AAUW LEGACY CIRCLE
Become a member of the AAUW Legacy Circle by making a planned gift to AAUW. The gift will affirm your commitment to expanding AAUW programs and public policy agenda the future of women and girls. These gifts can be given to AAUW's general fund or directed to your preferred program. Help our branch earn Five Stars by signing up for a legacy gift today.
AAUW seeks to increase our long-term financial resources to help continue our important work. Members of the Legacy Circle have that expansion through their planned gifts.
Questions? Read more about the Legacy Circle, review the brochure or contact the Director, Major and Planned Giving at 202.785.7766.
5 Issues We’re Watching in 2020

AAUW will be watching closely to see where candidates stand on these five issues:
  1. Equal Pay for Equal Work. To close the stubborn wage gap, we need leaders who will pass the federal Paycheck Fairness Act and advocate for laws and policies that ensure women are not discriminated against at work.
  2. Investing in Education. Education is the pathway for women and girls, but too many of our schools are falling short. We need to raise teacher pay, invest in STEM education, protect Title IX and make education a top national priority.
  3. Reducing Student Debt. Women hold two-thirds of the nation’s $1.46 trillion educational debt. Policymakers should protect grant programs, champion tuition and debt-free options and expand loan forgiveness programs.
  4. Strengthening Social Security. Because of lower wages and time off from work, women collect about $320 a month less than men do in Social Security benefits. Our lawmakers need to address the retirement wage gap women face.
  5. Implementing Paid Leave. The U.S. is the only developed country without paid family and sick leave. Let’s adopt policies to give workers paid time off for illness and care giving.
