MARCH BRANCH ZOOM MEETING
Peace is Possible!
Date: Saturday, March 13
Time: 2:00 PM
Speaker: Sherry McIntyre
Please join us and meet Sherry McIntyre, who teaches world religion at Johansen High School, Modesto, CA. Modesto Schools is the only district in the nation to require the study of world religions in order for a student to graduate. To start such a controversial class in 2000, the educators met with all the religious leaders within their community, asking how to best serve them in creating the class, and with the First Amendment Center in Washington, D.C. The class now is in its 21st year and is more important than ever. What makes such a class unique and valuable will be fully shared; but generally, Sherry believes that “Hate comes from fear, fear comes from ignorance, and by replacing ignorance with wisdom, peace is possible.”
Sherry is a member of the Board of the Stanislaus County Interfaith Council, the Chairperson of the Teacher Advisory Board for the Kaur Foundation and has been featured in numerous news stories, magazine articles, television interviews and books, including Teaching about Religions (Dr. Emile Lester) and Faith (Linda K. Wertheirmer). Sherry presented 2017 TedX, and recently Amazon Prime's production, The Antidote. Sherry lives in Modesto with her husband (her high school sweetheart, married since 2007, after 25 years apart) and the last two of her six children.

April Branch Zoom Meeting
Who is Margaret Jacks and What Does She Mean to Monterey?
Date: Saturday, April 10
Time: 2:00 PM
Speaker: Mimi Sheridan
Few speak of Margaret Jacks today, but people on the Monterey Peninsula enjoy her legacy every day. She was passionately devoted to preserving and improving Monterey, both its historic and natural features. She devoted her time and influence, as well as her inheritance from her father, land baron David Jacks, toward these goals. Her forty years of generosity and leadership made her one of the most important philanthropists in the state.
Presented by Mimi Sheridan who earned her BA in history from UCSB and Master's in Urban Planning and Historic Preservation from University of Washington. She worked for two decades as a preservation consultant in the Seattle area and taught historic preservation in U. of W.'s graduate program in urban planning. May Branch Zoom Meeting
Virtual Gallery Tour:
Center for Photographic Art (CPA)
Date: Saturday, May 1
Time: 2:00 PM
Speaker: Ann Jastrab, Executive Director for the Center for Photographic Art
We will be given a brief introduction and overview of the Center where there are online presentations, lectures, member nights, workshops, gallery talks and fundraisers. CPA strives to advance photography through education, exhibitions and publications. The Center evolved from Friends of Photography established in 1967 by Ansel Adams, Wynn Bullock and Cole Weston.
We will then be given a tour led by Ann Jastrab, Executive Director for the Center, in which we will have a virtual walk-through of their annual Members Juried Exhibition. Each year CPA hosts an exhibition solely for its members and this year’s juror is renowned photographer Susan Burnstine. Susan will select 45 images for the historic gallery in Carmel. Ann will take us through the images as well as discuss the various artists and processes included in the show. You can learn more about CPA through their website: https://photography.org.
Ann M Jastrab, Director, before coming onboard at CPA, was the gallery manager at Scott Nichols Gallery in San Francisco where she incorporated contemporary artists with the living legends in photography. Ann also worked as the gallery director at RayKo Photo Center in San Francisco for 10 years until their closure in 2017.

PRESIDENTS' MESSAGE
History is made up of stories. Growing up, most of those stories ignored women’s vital roles in history. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, let’s tell “herstory”.
In the 2020 election Black women were critical to turning out the vote. In January, after more than 200 years, Kamala Harris was sworn in as our first woman Vice President. This month, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian economist and 1977-78 AAUW International Fellow, begins her term as the first African and the first woman to serve as Director General of the World Trade Organization. These are historic accomplishments built on the work and struggles of the generations who came before.
In February we paid tribute to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who spent her career overturning gender-based stereotypes. Do you recall job ads segregated by sex? Did you struggle to get a credit card in your name? To buy a car without a male co-signer? Did a coworker lose a job when her pregnancy showed? Did your boss tell you that you didn’t deserve to earn as much as a man? Thanks to RBG, these scenarios seem fictional today.
But we know there’s more to do. Share your stories with young men and women; inspire their confidence to fight for equal pay, reproductive rights and racial equity. Your stories, your lived experiences are herstory. Tell your stories so that women’s accomplishments are noted and recorded, as they should have always been.
Thank you for participating in our activities; gratitude to those who have stepped up to present programs, coordinate book clubs, support students and much more. Most of all, celebrate yourself during Women’s History Month; you earned it.
Fatima Dias and Joanne Webster, Co-Presidents

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIPS
We welcome interested volunteers!! Our Local Scholarship Program is one of our outreach projects serving students in the Monterey County area. Please join us for the rewarding experience of selecting and interviewing our Local Scholarship finalists! Just a few hours of your time in April when our committee conducts interviews with potential scholarship candidates of three local schools: MPC, Hartnell and CSUMB. We meet twice for each school and ask that you try to commit to attend both meetings. At the first meeting, we winnow down the applications to five finalists. Then an interview time is set up with the school and we interview (via Zoom) each applicant, spending about 15 minutes with each.

VIRTUAL TECH TREK 2021
March will be a busy month for the Tech Trek Committee. We will be reviewing the applications from our 7th grade girls and determining who will be attending the summer camps. Based on the camps being virtual, having a lower cost, and being able to accommodate more girls, we will be selecting 15 girls to attend, rather than our original plan for 6 girls! While the online camps are not the same experience as spending a week on campus, we are excited to be able to give more girls a special STEM experience. Girls will be given materials and have hands on activities they will work on from home. The camps are looking for Virtual Coaches (Build/technical as well as Social Coaches). If you are interested in learning more and considering being a Coach, contact Pat Fletcher (pfletcher02@gmail.com).
We expect the 2022 camp to return to the in-person experience. We plan to again have a fundraiser in Fall 2021 to raise funds for the 2022 camp, so don’t forget about Tech Trek!

GIVING BACK: AAUW FUNDS
There are many ways you can invest in a fairer future for women and girls by donating to AAUW. By making a planned gift to AAUW National, you become a member of the AAUW Legacy Circle and affirm your commitment to equity. These gifts are donations that you designate in your will, estate or trust. There is no minimum gift requirement to join the Legacy Circle, and the benefits are many. For example: Planned gifts afford you flexibility to provide for your family and support AAUW. Certain planned gifts may reduce estate or capital gains taxes. Planned gifts need not affect your cash flow during your lifetime. Certain types of planned gifts allow you to support AAUW while also providing income for the rest of your life — or a fixed income for a loved one. The joy of knowing that your legacy gift will sustain AAUW’s programs for years to come is the ultimate benefit!
You can find more information about different planned giving possibilities at:
A Legacy Circle member from our branch, Sharyn Siebert, has offered to answer questions on the matter at 831-809-4918. For detailed help contact AAUW National's specialist Heather Miller at millerh@aauw.org or 202.785.7766.

NATIONAL ELECTION 2021
This spring, AAUW members will be asked to vote on amendments to the Public Policy Priorities and bylaws, in addition to electing members to the national board of directors. The bylaws change would eliminate the education requirement for membership to AAUW. Go to this link for the information you need on the proposed bylaws and Public Policy Priorities changes. The comment period is now closed. Voting will begin in April.
We are providing the following link for members who wish to understand AAUW's reasoning for eliminating the education requirement. The Monterey Peninsula Branch Board is not taking a stand on this matter and we encourage members to vote for or against this bylaws change based on their individual preference. To see it, click here.

In Memoriam
We wish to acknowlege the passing on January 8 of Gladys Olvis, a branch member until 2015. Education was her life's work, joining MPUSD in 1961. IN MEMORIAM
Charlene A. Setlow
April 14, 1944 - February 14, 2021
|
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Charlene Setlow at Stanford Hospital, Palo Alto. She was born in Idaho, where she lived for several years before moving to Monterey. She worked as a software consultant while getting her degree in Information Technology from San Jose State University. She was an IT Specialist and Software Engineer with international banking and financial firms for 30 years, until a heart transplant became necessary about 24 years ago.
As a philanthropist, she loved helping young college women achieve their educational goals in science. She established several scholarships and grants, including the AAUW Louise V. Setlow Scholarship at Stanford, and the Charlene A. Setlow STEM endowment at Mt. St. Mary's University, Los Angeles.
While she only joined our branch in 2016, she had a great impact, in spite of her medical challenges. She was the first in our branch to use her IRA required minimum distribution to source a contribution to scholarships. She was honored at our January 2017 branch meeting for establishing a Tech Trek scholarship in memory of her mother, Louise V. Setlow. She was a very passionate member of the Tech Trek Committee, encouraging girls to enter STEM careers. She was always very upbeat and had many great ideas for growing and improving the program. She was the grant writer for our local Tech Trek program and was successful getting grants from Yellow Brick Road. She herself was a generous donor to the program, inspiring others in her family to help out as well.
Cremation will be in Monterey County with scattering of her ashes in Monterey Bay. Her smiles and grace will be sorely missed.
Donations may be made to Tech Trek in her name with a check payable to "AAUW-CA SPF", with Tech Trek and Charlene's name in the memo line. Send it to Pat Fletcher, 6 Overlook Place, Monterey, CA 93940.

Newsletter Backup Person Needed!
Your branch board has recognized that an assistant newsletter editor is needed!
Communication with branch members depends primarily on the online production of the newsletters and eblasts that come to your email Inboxes each month, using an online service from Constant Contact. At this point, there are only eight members (that we know of) who do not have email, and a printed copy is mailed to them.
While most of the writing in the newsletter is done by the various board members relating to their elected or appointed positions, their input needs to be sought and organized and plugged in to the template in Constant Contact; the editor's job. If the editor should become indisposed at a critical time, a second person needs to be ready to step in and "keep the presses rolling". If you believe you would enjoy being that person, please contact me.
