Dear Branch Members
Please join us in thanking our President Sherene Chen for her dedication to the mission of AAUW, as well as for her service to our branch. Sherene brought vibrancy and energy to the position of the presidency for which we honor, respect, and thank her. We wish Sherene all the best for the future in these difficult times.
We are delighted to announce that the Board has appointed Dottie Burk President for the fiscal year 2020-2021. Dottie is a former President and a long-time member of our branch and knows the ropes – it is wonderful to have her back in the role.
“It’s an exciting and challenging time to take on this role. Fortunately, timing is good as I have just retired!” Dottie Burk.
A further note, Lisa Allanson is unable the hold the treasurer position this year for personal reasons. Dianne Sheridan will remain as treasurer
Thank you all for your continuing commitment to the branch and the mission of AAUW and most importantly supporting each other during the uncertain times.

What is Happening with Tech Trek?
|
|
Earlier this year the Marin County Branch of the AAUW selected eight young women, from thirty-two nominated by their Marin County Public School 7
th
grade science and math teachers, to attend a week-long STEM camp at Stanford University. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 the Stanford University campus is not available to host the 2020 Tech Trek Camp.
As an alternative, the Branch will be conducting a VIRTUAL camp the week of July 6
th
– 10
th
. Twelve amazing women in a variety of STEM professions have volunteered to perform zoom presentations to inspire and inform these select girls. To top off the experience, the girls will be presented with a Camp Kit fully fitted to conduct interesting and fun experiments and activities that will be performed virtually as part of the program.

A Zoom Summer Fling
Sunday, July 26 at 1 pm
Join us! Wear or bring a pin that you particularly like—a piece of special or favorite jewelry or a button highlighting a favorite cause. After some introductory announcements and comments, we’ll split up into small “breakout rooms” to share what we’ve chosen and why. If you can take your laptop outside to zoom, so much the better! Nothing wrong with showing off your sun hat, too.
No need to RSVP. The zoom link will be sent the week before to the entire branch, and again on the day of.
If you’d like to invite a guest, send Cherie,
[email protected],

GET TO KNOW A MEMBER
AFAF IBRAHIM MELEIS
|
|
My name is Afaf Ibrahim Meleis. I am a nurse, a scientist, a social scientist, an academician (UCSF and UPenn), an administrator (UPenn Emeritus Dean) a wife, a mother and a very proud grandmother. I came from Alexandria, Egypt about sixty years ago to do graduate work at UCLA. I moved up to Marin in 1971, and except for a two years sabbatical in Kuwait and 16 years academic detour to Philadelphia, both my husband (of fifty years) Mahmoud Meleis Ph.D. (nuclear engineer) and myself have lived and raised our two sons in Greenbrae.
Luckily one of our sons decided to move back from the East Coast to live, with his wife and four children, in Mill Valley. Our older son lives, with his wife and three children, outside Boston. Currently, I am retired, volunteer as a trustee for a global university, Aga Khan University with six campuses and four hospitals in East Africa, Asia, UK, and Canada. I also serve on the Board of Trustees for the world renowned Buck Institute for Research on Aging, I have the privilege of being able to continue to do what I love most, mentoring women who are deans and researchers. I love traveling (professionally and socially), hiking, walking, reading books, dining out, cooking ethnic dishes, and babysitting my grandchildren. My limited skills in the virtual and computer worlds are a great frustration to me.
I am thrilled to be a member of AAUW whose values about empowering women and girls resonate with my lifelong passion of enhancing equity and safety for girls, women and nurses. But, I am afraid we still have a long way to go to overcome the impact of the gender divide as well as racism.
