Chat with Leslie

Hello all!

Whew! We did it! Our annual Marin scholarship auction is in the books. Thank you Dottie Burk and Dianne Sheridan for your leadership and hard work. Thanks go to the auction committee, the set-up team with Pauline Nacamuli, and every single one of you who solicited donations, donated, and bid!

If you weren’t able to attend our holiday luncheon, we missed you! More than 50 interesting women chatted, laughed, and bought gifts donated by generous members. Cherie Sorokin designed an opportunity to share our favorite books and women authors. Watch for that list in January’s newsletter!

Happy and healthy holidays and I look forward to seeing you in 2024!

December--Come and Gone!

January--Coming Right Up!

We Had a Great Time at Our December Holiday Lunch!

Hope You Were There!

Our annual festive holiday lunch at McInnis Park was last Saturday. Fifty-two members and guests attended and were treated to a terrific selection of direct buys, Cherie's semi-annual poem, a fun ice-breaker, a tasty meal, and some well deserved awards. Here's Cherie's poem. Look near the end of this newsletter for some pictures from the event.

Cherie's Poem (12/2/23)

It’s lovely to be here today,

Amid more than 50 wonderful women, hooray!

But we’re still waiting, alas, for that fateful day.

When all women finally get equal pay,

And less student debt to defray,

Not to mention equal rights, I must say!

Thank goodness there’s AAUW leading the way.

Our focus on research, education, and advocacy, ain’t no hay,

And is clearly more useful to our daughters than anything in Santa’s sleigh.

So let’s raise a toast, to AAUW friends,

And our efforts to remake the world with a feminist lens.

Getting More Women Ready to Vote!

January 17, 2024 at 6:00 pm on Zoom.

January's program will focus on the effort to register women to vote. Speakers will be from Register Her, a non-partisan non-profit that seeks to register women, and particularly younger women, women of color and women in lower economic brackets who often fail to register and vote. Watch for the invitation in early January.

AAUW and Marin Schools Working Together

Nancy Major, Kathleen Clark, and Leslie Zimring met with John Carroll, Superintendent of Schools and Dr. Lisa Miller, Asst. Superintendent of Schools on November 3rd to discuss how the work of AAUW Marin benefits students in Marin. Both Mr. Carroll and Dr. Miller were familiar with Tech Trek and were interested in learning about Gov Trek. We have shared information about both programs and they are disseminating it to the schools. We just need to follow up with principals and guidance counselors! If you are interested in this project, please contact either Angela Nuckles or Nancy Major.

Fall Fundraising for Scholarships and Tech Trek

The auction is over but you can still help!

The online auction and the direct buy sales, which benefit, the AAAW Marin Scholarship Fund, had a bumper year! Thank you to the many who donated or solicited auction items or who bid on auction items, and thank you to the Auction Committee for much hard work. We are still tallying the results. Look for a full report in the January newsletter.

If you still wish to contribute to our Fall fundraising efforts, here are two ideas for you.

Donate to the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund.

It's not too late to respond to the fund-raising letter from Scholarship Chair Laura O’Malley sent in November. Your donation will support our local college scholarships and awards as well as Tech Trek sponsorships and enabling college students to attend AAUW's National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL).

  • Donate via PayPal (debit or credit card) by clicking HERE. Use the drop-down menu to designate how you want your donation to be used.  If you want to designate more than one target, repeat the process. OR
  • Send a check made out to the AAUW Marin Scholarship Fund.to Laura O'Malley, 32 Maplewood Dr., San Rafael, 94901. Indicate in the memo section of your check how you want your donation to be used. You can target your donation to local college scholarships, Tech Trek sponsorships, college scholarship endowments, or "unrestricted."

Fold a gift card holder

Are you giving gift cards this year? Learn how to fold this attractive gift card holder. Join us on Thursday, December 14 at 10 A.M. at Dottie Burk’s home, 41 Bayview Terrace, Mill Valley. For a $20.00 donation to the Scholarship Fund, you will take home 3 flapping bird envelopes. Guests are welcome. We will help each other so everyone will be successful. All materials will be provided.

Reserve your spot with Amy Anderson, or text 415-259-8892

Nancy Finston Does it Again!

Perfect timing. Thanks to Nancy, AAUW Marin had another Giving Marin ad published in the IJ. The ad which appeared in the November 26 issue, was sponsored by the Marin Independent Journal. The same ad which promotes our college scholarships program is expected to run again in December with sponsorship by the College of Marin. How appropriate as we are major donors of scholarships to women at COM. See our November newsletter for a picture of the ad Nancy created for Tech Trek.

And speaking of Tech Trek....

Meet a Tech Trek Alumna

Maggie Kepler

"Tech Trek was truly so fundamental in my passion in the sciences and building confidence as a woman in STEM."

Did you meet Maggie at our October Tech Trek event? She attended Tech Trek Camp in 2011, graduated from Redwood High School, and then from from Cal Poly with a major in Biochemistry and minor in Biotechnology. Following graduation, Maggy worked in the laboratory at J. Lohr Vineyards assisting with harvest fermentation science and quality control before moving to SF as a clinical patient navigator with Spring Fertility. Maggy is currently pursuing a Masters in Genetic Counseling at UCSF.

Just look at how Tech Trek can motivate a young woman to pursue the sciences. If you haven’t already done so, please donate to the Scholarship Fund.

Welcome New Member

Sally Williams

Sally was born in England and moved to the US in 1979. She was a registered nurse in both places. Taking early retirement, she and her husband sailed the world in their own sailboat! Their first sail was from Sweden to Rhode Island, with 2 more transatlantic crossings, including recreating Columbus's sail from Spain to the Bahamas. Sally currently lives at Villa Marin where she is very active on committees and the Board. She enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren in Marin, and continues to travel, although no longer on a sailboat! She is looking forward to participating in AAUW and we are looking forward to her joining us.

Other Member News

You may remember that a featured item in our 2021 fundraising auction was an offer by member Janet Quin-Harkin (AKA Rhys Bowen) to include the winning bidder as a character in one of her upcoming books. Two members shared the winning bid. The first book, The Paris Assignment, is out now and features Mary Fran McCluskey. Another one featuring Nancy Van Horn will be published in the spring. Thank you again Janet!

Former branch president Ginny Pabst passed away on November 3, 2023. Ginny was a proud president of AAUW Marin from 1979-1981. Her obituary was published in the November 26 edition of the Marin IJ.
