Greetings,
Early voting began this week. If you haven’t voted yet, I urge you to vote in this very important primary election. Issues that are important to AAUW members are at stake in the November election which makes this primary one to make sure we participate in. I know that it can seem overwhelming when thinking of the world’s seeming problems. I am reminded of a quote from Anne Frank. “
How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.
” We can all do something, to change the world for the better; a smile, a word of encouragement, as well as using our voice at the ballot box. I am proud to be a part of AAUW SA where women gather in support of women and girls everywhere and support each other in our individual efforts and in our personal lives through friendship.
I hope you will join us for our March meeting where we will hear from Dr. Deborah Liles from Tarleton University in Stephenville. She will honor us for Women’s History Month with stories of women farmers and ranchers, their economic struggles and their impact on Texas life. Let’s show her a big San Antonio welcome. Feel free to bring a friend.

Dr. Deborah Liles is an assistant professor and the W. K. Gordon Chair of Texas History at Tarleton State University. She earned her PhD at the University of North Texas, where she examined the antebellum livestock trade and its relationship to the institution of slavery. She is the author of multiple book chapters, articles, and three co-edited anthologies including
Texas Women and Ranching: On the Range, At the Rodeo, In the Community,
and
African Americans in Central Texas History: From Slavery to Civil Rights.
Her former co-edited book,
Women in Civil War Texas: Diversity and Dissidence in the Trans-Mississippi
won the 2016 Liz Carpenter Award for best book on Texas Women’s History and the Ottis Lock Award for book of the year. Current book projects are

The scholarship committees are busy reviewing 22 textbook applications and 7 graduate applications. Comments I have heard are along the line of "impressive." Their recommendations will be presented to the Board of Directors on March 7th. Do come to the April 4th Branch meeting to meet the recipients.

Work Smart
Networking is paying off so that more women can take steps toward economic equity! Remember our November meeting highlighting San Antonio’s YWCA with Francesca Rattray, CEO? Suzanne Benson and Karen Reichensperger attended the YWCA’s recent wage equity event during DreamWeek, as mentioned in the President’s greeting last month. Now Malinda Gaul is working with Lily Casura, MSW (new SA AAUW member), Director of Equity and Impact of the YWCA, to present the Work Smart salary negotiation workshop.

San Antonio Boards and Commissions Vacancies

The following are some San Antonio Boards and Commissions Vacancies.
Building Standards Board: The Building Standards Board is a citizen-based board and has 14 members appointed by City Council: two panels of seven members each. Appointed by the City Council with each City Council member appointing their own representative to the board. Members serve overlapping two-year terms and there is no limit on the number of terms that may be served. Each panel holds a hearing twice per month unless otherwise indicated. Meeting dates are the first and third Thursdays for Panel A, and the second and fourth Thursdays for Panel B. Meetings are held at the Cliff Morton Development and Business Services Center, located at 1901 S. Alamo St., at 9:00 a.m.
SA Climate Ready Advisory Committee: The Office of Sustainability has released the official applications for the advisory committees that will assist in the implementation of the SA Climate Ready Climate Action and Adaptation Plan, the Technical and Community Advisory Committee and the Climate Equity Advisory Committee. Hard-copy applications are available at all library branches.
San Antonio Early Childhood Education Municipal Development Corporation: The Pre-K 4 SA Board is comprised of 11 members serving staggered two-year terms of office. There is no limit to the number of terms that may be served. The mission is to provide strategic direction for Pre-K 4 SA to develop a highly-skilled workforce in one generation through quality early childhood education for all children in San Antonio. Meeting Schedule and Location: Unless otherwise posted, meetings are typically held on the first Tuesday of every month at 2:00 p.m. at a Pre-K 4 SA Education Center.

Membership Renewal Time
Membership renewal for AAUW for the 2020-2021 fiscal year will begin March 16. The current fiscal year of 2019-2020 began July 1 and ends June 30. Members who pay their dues between March 16 and May 2 will be entered in the Early Bird Drawing at the May 2 meeting. The winner will receive free membership for the 2020-2021 fiscal year. The dues are $88.00 for the year.
Current members will receive an email from membershipinfo@aauw.org to renew online. Open the link, hit renew and pay with credit or debit card. Members who prefer to pay by check may write the check to AAUW-SA and bring it to the branch meeting or mail it to Kathy Dicke, 4307 Paddling Pass, San Antonio, TX 73253.
Please encourage friends to join AAUW this spring. New members who join in March will be members for the rest of 2019-2020 and the entire fiscal year of 2020-2021.

Five Star National Recognition Program
|
|
The new Five Star National Recognition Program rewards branches for aligning their work with the AAUW strategic plan and other initiatives that foster the mission of advancing gender equity for women and girls. The San Antonio Branch is working to receive all five stars: Programs, Advancement, Communications and External Relations, Public Policy and Research, and Governance and Sustainability.

To obtain the Advancement star we must have a $30 per member contribution to the greatest needs of AAUW. The goal for the San Antonio Branch is $2,700 by June 30, 2020. Go to the
