Volume 111 Issue 3
2019-2020 Theme:
Economic Security for Women
Message from the President
We are entering the holiday season. It can be a busy time, filled with family, to do lists and memories. With Thanksgiving this month, I want to take a moment to show my thanks to all of you who support AAUW with your presence and your membership. I want to give special thanks to Karen Reichensperger who is chairing both the College/University Task Force and the Scholarship Committees and all the members that have and will volunteer to serve on these two important committees. I have gratitude for the board members who show thoughtful leadership and the activity group leaders who keep us together and make our lives richer in community.

I want to remind you that on November 5, Texas voters will decide on 10 constitutional amendments. Let’s tell our families, neighbors and friends to remember to vote in this important election.

I hope to see you at our November meeting at Max and Louie’s Deli. At this time, you will have an opportunity to learn more about our scholarship program and get involved in this important committee. And of course, we will look forward to a wonderful speaker about a topic we are passionate about. See the information and link to RSVP in this newsletter.

Scholarships

Soliciting graduate and textbook scholarship committee members. We start this month (November) by verifying contact information at various colleges/universities, so that I can electronically send out the criteria and application information. This year, for the first time, we will accept electronic applications. We are moving into the 21st century!! Let me know at the November meeting or via email if you would like to be a part of this very rewarding activity. The next activity will be reviewing the applications in February, so not much work for so much of a reward!

Fundraising for Scholarships

$500 Visa Gift Card Drawing

The proceeds of the drawing will be used for textbook scholarships that assist women attending a college or university in Bexar County. The drawing for the Visa $500 gift card will be held at our December meeting. You do not need to be present to win or be a member to purchase tickets for the scholarship fund. Tickets are $10 each or three for $25.00. Near the end of October you will receive a letter with tickets. You may return your check and the top section of your tickets in the stamped addressed enclosed envelope. If you prefer, bring cash or check to the November and December meetings and purchase your tickets there.

Thank you!
Ann Marie Rehner
Welcome Lily Casura, who joined at the October meeting. We look forward to getting to know you and hope you will join some of our interest groups.
College/University Task Force

The C/U Task Force consisting of Diane Carr, Martha Steele and myself are in the process of contacting current representatives and identifying contacts from non-affiliates, so that we can meet with them regarding AAUW C/U membership. Their students got so much for the $175 that the college/university pays for membership. Ask any of us about the numerous benefits. Suggest women studies deans or administrative contacts to any of us. More than 5 (look in your directory for the 5) of the 14 colleges/universities in our area should belong.

The San Antonio Branch is working to receive all five stars: Programs, Advancement, Communications and External Relations, Public Policy and Research, and Governance and Sustainability.

ADVANCEMENT

To obtain the Advancement star we must have a $30 per member contribution to the greatest needs of AAUW. The goal for the San Antonio Branch is $2,700 by June 30, 2020. Go to the aauw.org website and donate so AAUW can use your gift where it is needed most.
