AAUW Texas President’s Message

By Pam Wolfe

One of the biggest changes the Co-Presidents have suggested for AAUW Texas this biennium is the restructuring of the board. You may be asking why we bothered to make the changes. It is the responsibility of an organization to occasionally review the functions and responsibilities of the organization with its members. The AAUW Texas Board needed to review the functions of the board and branches we serve.

As branches are growing smaller in membership, I would like to encourage you to review the “necessary” board positions in your branch. This is an action that should occasionally occur and the perfect time to do so is now. AAUW has a new bylaw’s toolkit and wants every state and branch to send them a copy of their updated bylaws with the new mandatory changes by national.

How to submit your branch/state bylaws to AAUW no later than June 30, 2026: https://www.aauw.org/resources/member/leader-resources-tools/bylaws-toolkit/

The latest bylaw changes from AAUW were in 2023 to Articles I – VII. These are the mandatory bylaws that each branch must have in their bylaws. Hopefully, your bylaws chair has already updated your bylaws to reflect the required AAUW portion of the bylaws. When reviewing your bylaws, why not review the entire document and ask if your various bylaw articles are still necessary and reflect the action you need done. Your bylaws chair or her committee can review and make changes with approval by the branch at your annual business meeting (often in April). Your branch bylaws may not conflict with mandatory AAUW bylaws. If you have any questions, please send an email to AAUWTXPres@gmail.com.

SHARE Applications will be available on the website after December 15. (State and Branch Resources: | AAUW of Texas) The branch may apply for funds for Branch Projects and/or NCCWSL.

In January you will have a new AAUW Texas Co-President, Malinda Gaul.

AAUW Responds

AAUW had signed onto the letter along with 3700 other nonprofits in response to a Presidential Memoranda September 25, 2025 which can be found at Countering Domestic Terrorism and Organized Political Violence – The White House . The memo threatens to investigate “institutional and individual funders, and officers and employees of organizations, that are responsible for, sponsor, or otherwise aid and abet” causes, policies or ideas that President Trump opposes. There is concern any nonprofit and its staff could be targeted.

AAUW Texas Promotes Voting

The Public Policy Seminar held in October featured representatives from two nonprofit organizations, VoteRiders and Votebeat.

VoteRiders.org is a national organization that provides information on voter registration requirements and voting requirements in every state. It is focused on eliminating ID barriers to voting, educating voters on ID requirements to vote, and providing free, direct help to any indigent voter who needs an ID. That includes covering the fees and transportation associated with getting an ID. While you may not have difficulty obtaining an ID, you may know someone who can’t vote because they do not have an ID.  Check out this organization.

Votebeat is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization committed to reporting about elections. Their specific focus is on how elections are run, from voter registration, early and mail-in voting to election security. There are Reporters are in five states including Texas. You can sign up for their national newsletter which comes out once a month or the Texas newsletter which comes out twice a month. Visit their website: Votebeat.org

Some recent good news

A federal court judge recently ruled that the law, Texas 2023 House Bill 900, the "READER" act, violates the U.S. Constitution. Barring an appeal by Texas to the U.S. Supreme Court the law will come to an end. The law would have required book vendors to put content ratings on their books. The Texas Education Agency would have been able to overrule those ratings, and failure to comply would have led to the removal of books from school libraries.

The New Citizenship Test

Citizens applying for naturalization on or after Oct. 20 will have to pass a more difficult test. Applicants will be asked 20 questions, drawn from 128 questions and chosen at random. The applicant must get a least 12 correct to pass. There’s a greater focus on American history, and some revised questions require longer answers than before. Could you pass? Concerns of Texas Teachers

The annual Texas teacher poll conducted by the Charles Butt Foundation released in October found that 70% of teachers say they lack adequate support from their campus to meet the needs of students experiencing behavioral challenges. Teachers indicated they needed more support in handling discipline.  Sixty-six percent of teachers said they have seriously considered leaving their position in the past year, an improvement over last year when it was 78 percent. Will the teacher pay raises passed by the legislature last year be enough to persuade teachers to stay in the profession? Find more information at The 2025 Texas Teacher Poll: Craft, Care, and A Call to Action

The Primary Election 2026 coming soon!

Your vote often matters more in a primary than in the fall election because a smaller share of people vote, and because of gerrymandering and noncompetitive elections. In Texas, who’ll run the state is usually decided in the spring primary election! Unless you live in one of the rare House districts with a relatively even partisan balance, your best way of impacting Texas legislative and congressional elections is by voting in the primary.

Prepare to make an informed decisions by learning about the candidates.

Reaching for the Stars,

Convention Raffles

by Debbie Campbell and Margie Poole

Next state-wide Programs & Funds officer Zoom meeting: Tuesday, February 10, at 7 pm*

Watch for the Zoom link the week of the meeting.

At our November statewide Zoom meeting, we learned several easy ways for every Texas branch to shine in National's Five Star program.

We invite you and your branch to (re)watch the Zoom recording for ideas.

Over 44 minutes (Hint: shorter if you increase the Playback Speed), we focused on two possible goals:

  • Hold at least 4 programs* that align with AAUW’s strategic plan

(0:00 Cheri talks about Five Star targets related to Programs)

  • Recruit at least one** Legacy Circle member from your branch in FY26

(11:00 Debbie introduces our Legacy Circle presenters, Jackie Littleton and Jean Dodds)

Zoom Video Highlights

* Attending our April 25 state convention (in person or via Zoom) counts as 1 out of only 4 programs needed for a Programming star

** You only need 1 new Legacy Circle member to count towards only 3 goals for an Advancement Star

Becoming a Legacy Circle member can be as easy as naming National as the Payable on Death (POD) beneficiary on a bank account you maintain control of until your passing. Other options are available on our national website.

There is no minimum gift requirement, and you don't have to tell National how much you are donating, but...

DO use the following information to distinguish National from a separate gift intended for your local branch or state board:

“AAUW (Federal Tax ID #52-6037388), a charitable organization duly existing under the laws of the District of Columbia and located at 1310 L St. NW, Suite 1000, Washington, DC 20005”

DO fill out the form HERE and let your branch know, to make it official. Again, you don't have to tell National how much you are donating.

DO tell your family about your decision to leave something to National (and/or your local or state AAUW). You could even video your discussion for future reference.

Call for Convention Raffle Items

To advance our national mission of achieving gender equity for women and girls, proceeds from our April 2025 state convention raffles will support branch efforts toward National’s Five Star program. For example, this could look like the state board’s donating on behalf of a branch to National’s Defend Higher Education Fund or Public Policy Fund, bringing that branch one step closer to an Advancement star (i.e., for Funds and Membership).

With this goal in mind, convention planners are asking branch presidents and Funds officers to consider donating raffle items for their convention location. For practicality, items should be easy for winners to carry home (by car or airplane) or receive by mail. More on this in the new year.

*If you have questions about Funds or would like to receive meeting announcements for state-wide Funds officers, contact Funds Vice President aauw.debbie.campbell@gmail.com (Life Member, Houston and West Harris County Branches).

Northeast Tarrant County Branch Legacy Circle

NETC Welcomes Sue Rudolph to the Legacy Circle

Although I’ve only been a member for a year, I have for a long time seen my friend Sue Traver’s dedication to this organization. And now I see that dedication runs deep through the whole membership, which has totally amazed me. I have never seen an organization where the commitment runs so wide and deep.

As a public school educator for my career I obviously believe in the importance of education. I am always looking for organizations with the ability to support those causes I believe in.

I have also gotten the joy of seeing how much we help as the new chair of the committee who awards the Dental Hygiene Scholarship.
