The American Association of University Women at UH Mānoa (AAUW at UHM) is and will continue to be active for the 2022-23 academic school year.

The mission of our Registered Independent Organization (RIO) is to promote the values of AAUW on the UHM campus and in the community; we are working towards equity in society by providing the tools necessary for women to gain economic security, pursue their education, and advocate for women's rights.

AAUW at UHM's internship program, consisting of six students from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, is housed in the Office of Civic and Community Engagement, under the supervision of Director Atina Pascua, and sponsored by the AAUW Honolulu Branch.

To become a member, please email [email protected] expressing your interest. We will ask follow up questions at that time. In order to have an active-status in our RIO, we ask that you attend at least one event every semester. We have no membership fees. Our RIO is open to everyone!

AAUW at UH Mānoa's events are kindly sponsored by
the UH Mānoa Office of Civic and Community Engagement (OCCE)

National American Indian Heritage Month

National American Indian Heritage Month or more commonly known as Native American Heritage month is celebrated from November 1 through November 30.

Native American Heritage month was declared the month of November by President George H. W. Bush on August 3. 1990. This month is a time to celebrate rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories and to acknowledge the important contributions of Native people. It is also a time to educate the general public about tribes and to raise awareness about the unique challenges Native people have faced both historically and in the present. We Asked a Friend: Thanksgiving Edition

For this month's edition of We Asked a Friend, we asked the members of our AAUW at UHM intern team: What are you thankful for?

Ronja

Marine Biology Major

I have a long list of things that I am thankful for. Here are some of the top ones: being surrounded by supportive friends and family, going to college and access to higher education, my health (physical and mental well-being), the activities that give me joy (including running, hiking, swimming, and scuba diving), music, fungi, and the incredible nature that surrounds us here. As I finish up my undergraduate degree, I am also reminded of how grateful I am for the lessons that I have learned during my time at this institution and the amazing community of peers and mentors that have carried me through my time here.

Susannah

Philosophy Graduate Student

I am thankful for the people and relationships that sustain me: my family, friends, classmates, co-workers, mentors, and those advocating for equity and liberation in their respective places of influence in society.

Liza

Communications Graduate Student

I am thankful for my friends! They are always there for me and lend a helping hand. This year has been tough for me emotionally and mentally, and I am grateful for the open communication, support, and encouragement I receive from them and vice versa.

Chloe

Communications Major

I am thankful for so many things. The amazing and supportive people in my life, like my family, my friends, and my classmates. Being able to attend college in a beautiful place like Hawai’i and activities like reading, diving, and sailing.

Megan W.

Marine Biology Major

I am very thankful for many things in my life. I am grateful to be surrounded by a supportive and encouraging community, as well as access to a college education in a beautiful place. I am grateful for my ability to explore nature in a variety of ways including hiking, diving, and skiing. I am also very appreciative of the ability and time to explore creative interests such as painting, baking, and reading. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season filled with love and laughter!

Juria Y.

Forensics Science Major

I have a lot to be thankful for, I am most thankful to be alive and surrounded by loving family and incredible friends who genuinely support me, understand me, and give me advice. I am appreciative of every life event I have had up to this point, good things or tough times have helped me become the person I am today. I appreciate my college education and the road ahead of me. Although the route may not be linear, I believe I will succeed. Cheers to many more blessings ahead.
