Colorado Annual Meeting On Track | |
Greetings, fellow veterinary diagnosticians! I hope all is going well and you are enjoying the sweet smell of spring. We are excited to be in the midst of our call for abstracts for the 2025 annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. This is the second time we will be at the relatively new Gaylord of the Rockies Hotel in the Denver Suburb of Aurora, where you can sit on the front lawn with your colleagues after a great day of scientific and business meetings and enjoy the sunset over the Rocky Mountains… truly spectacular! Program Chair Ashley Hill has arranged an outstanding program, and the plenary session is titled “What’s New is Old Again”. So don’t miss this great opportunity! SAVE THE DATES NOW, October 30th – November 5th !!
Last year, we had over 200 scientific presentations, posters, and several symposia for our attendees. We want to see your institution’s diagnostic work highlighted and preserved, and hope you are considering a professional presentation. If you are a mentor or advising professor of a diagnostician trainee, please work with them and encourage a scientific submission for a live presentation or poster; it will build their CV and grow their professional skills. Also, encourage them to apply for our various trainee awards, including travel awards and outstanding presentation awards. They are all listed in pertinent documents on our annual meeting website page; applicants apply as they submit their abstracts through our ScholarOne system. Like last year, only those applying for awards need to submit recordings (these recordings help our judges preview candidates for the various awards; an important process because we have so many great competitors). So please, SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACTS BY JUNE 27TH.
If you are a Committee Chair, spring and summer are great times to meet with your committees and discuss issues for your discipline and prepare for final deliberation and action at the annual meeting. Later this summer, we will hold an all-committee-chair Zoom meeting to update and prepare you for the annual meeting.
Be sure and scroll down this Newsletter and see several key announcements about laboratory expansions and leadership changes. Our AAVLD labs are truly on the move. Thank you, AAVLD diagnosticians, for the dedicated and essential public services you provide our Nation.
Most sincerely,
David H. Zeman, DVM, PhD, DA

| | 2025 NEUSAHA Meeting Held in Harrisburg | | |
The 2025 NEUSAHA annual meeting occurred this year in April at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex & Expo Center in Harrisburg. The meeting provided a valuable opportunity to connect with colleagues outside the usual October gathering and was a welcome change from virtual meetings. The inclusive nature of our regional group, which includes AAVLD representation, was notable, and the meeting featured interesting presentations on topics ranging from rabies and HPAI to mRNA vaccines and market prices. A highlight included multiple laboratory speakers from the NAHLN and NADPRP-funded “Transboundary, Regional Emerging and Novel Disease (TREND) Rounds,” an initiative open for northeast AAVLD members to join (email Rob to receive communications: robert.gibson@unh.edu). The meeting attendees also had the opportunity to tour the Pennsylvania Veterinary Laboratory that is across the street from the PA Expo Center. We look forward to seeing the rest of our amazing colleagues at the annual meeting this October, where NE AAVLD Representative Melanie Prarat (Ohio) and her virology co-chair, Roman Pogranichniy (Kansas) are presenting a one-day symposium, "International Experiences with High Consequence Animal Disease Outbreaks and Response" that includes speakers from Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Singapore and other countries.

Detection of Mycoplasmopsis (Mycoplasma) bovis in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded bovine lung sections by immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, Matthew Brown, Zackary Laney, Laila Tabatabai, Anna Hassebroek, Kevin Lahmers, Tessa LeCuyer, Francisco A. Uzal, Francisco R. Carvallo
Abstract. The bovine respiratory disease complex (BRDC) is a multifactorial disease of economic importance in cattle involving viral and bacterial agents and several environmental and host-associated predisposing factors. Mycoplasmopsis (Mycoplasma) bovis is frequently detected in BRDC cases, but the role of this bacterium in the pathogenesis of BRDC is not completely understood. We explored the utility of routine histopathology and compared immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) in pneumonic bovine lung tissue samples for the detection of M. bovis infection. Samples were analyzed for M. bovis using mycoplasma bacterial culture (screening test), H&E staining, IHC, and ISH. We found that “compatible histologic lesions” are not entirely predictive of the presence of M. bovis on culture, IHC, or ISH, and also that there was no statistical difference between IHC and ISH for detecting M. bovis. We conclude that IHC and ISH can be used interchangeably to detect M. bovis infections in pneumonic bovine lung. More
