2026 DTF Racehorse Necropsy Workshop, August 27 - 29
Join us in beautiful Lexington, KY this September for the fifth annual Davis Thompson Foundation Racehorse Necropsy Workshop. Over the two and one-half days of the workshop participants will gain both didactic and hands-on instruction in all facets of racehorse pathology from industry experts ranging from racing industry professionals to anatomic pathologists to researchers and surgeons. The workshop is meant to provide a strong foundation for the performance of racehorse postmortem exams, with opportunities for great networking to yield a strong support network. Our goal is to answer the one question that everyone has: what do they need from me?
Thursday and Friday didactic sessions are open to veterinarians, veterinary students, and laboratory support staff. The Saturday wet lab is designed to provide hands-on instruction to pathologists, pathology residents, and racing regulatory veterinarians. Wet lab activities include presentation of preserved specimens for demonstration of normal anatomy, common changes in the joints due to repetitive loading, and common fracture types, limb and heart dissection demonstrations, and limb and heart dissections by participants. The wet lab is limited to 20 pathologists/residents and 15 racing regulatory veterinarians.
The workshop is presented by the Davis Thompson Foundation and sponsored by Horse Racing Integrity and Safety Authority, with support from the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.
Registration opening soon!

| | | | Welcome to the Ohio Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (OVDL) webpage, dedicated to the latest updates on the construction of the new building. Construction of the laboratory is in full swing. | | OVDL Construction (December 2025) | | |
The state-of-the-art facility will replace the current laboratory, which began operating in the 1960’s, and has outgrown the testing capacity needed for the state’s growers and producers.
The 70,000 square building will include 40% more laboratory space and updated biosecurity measures. The building has been designed to be flexible to adapt to meet current and future laboratory testing needs of Ohio’s veterinarians and producers. A more energy efficient building will also accommodate laboratory and field staff in a single location and provide space for emergency planning and response.
This laboratory provides regulatory testing support for disease control programs and diagnostic laboratory services for veterinarians, livestock producers, and agribusinesses within and beyond Ohio. It conducts more than 500,000 tests a year and is the first line of defense in detecting any foreign animal disease.

Comparison of digital and optical microscopy for the evaluation of veterinary blood films: a preliminary study, Stephanie Anderson, Madhumitha Sivakumaran, Trey L. DeJong, Mara S. Varvil
Abstract. Digital microscopy is increasingly used in veterinary diagnostic pathology. However, limited independent research has been published on its use, especially for the purpose of evaluating blood films. Hence, determining the potential limits of blood film assessments obtained via digital microscopy is needed. We compared the agreement of digital and optical cytology for the detection of common cellular morphology changes and abnormalities in veterinary blood films. Twenty-two veterinary clinical pathologists and residents evaluated canine, feline, and equine blood films on glass slides via optical microscopy and digitized blood film slides, with a ≥8-wk washout period between evaluations. One of the equine cases was a patient experimentally infected with Theileria haneyi. Using a standardized rubric, 16 erythrocyte features, 2 platelet features, and 2 leukocyte features were scored from absent to 4+. Additional comments at pathologist discretion were recorded. Changes in erythrocyte shape, platelets, and leukocytes were readily identified on both digital and glass slides. T. haneyi organisms were identified on significantly fewer digitized blood film slides than glass slides. Additionally, intra-observer consistency was low between digitized blood film slide and glass slide evaluation. More
| | | JVDI call for submissions on Influenza A virus (2026.01.05) | | |
Influenza A viruses affect a wide range of domestic animals, laboratory species, and wildlife, and they continue to pose a frequent diagnostic and surveillance challenge for veterinary laboratories worldwide. In domestic animals, including poultry, swine, cattle, horses, and companion animals, influenza A viral infections can result in respiratory disease, decreased productivity, reproductive losses, and, in some species, severe systemic illness or high mortality. Laboratory animals are also susceptible to certain influenza A subtypes, which is relevant both for animal health and for their role as experimental models in pathogenesis, transmission, and vaccine studies. In wildlife, particularly avian species and selected mammals, influenza A viruses circulate endemically and periodically emerge or re-emerge, contributing to spillover events, population-level impacts, and significant public and animal health concerns. The broad host range, genetic diversity, and capacity for interspecies transmission make influenza A viruses a critical focus for diagnostic vigilance, epidemiologic investigation, and One Health–oriented disease monitoring across domestic, laboratory, and wild animal populations.
We are inviting submissions to a JVDI special section on Influenza A virus to be guest edited by Drs. Leyi Wang, University of Illinois, College of Veterinary Medicine; Melissa Macias-Rioseco CAHFS, University of California–Davis. JVDI readers would be interested in background review material and current laboratory investigations, including both successes and failures, or lessons learned.
If you are interested, please submit an abstract of up to 250 words describing your proposed topic by April 30th, 2026. Authors of accepted abstracts will be notified of acceptance by May 29th, 2026, and full submissions will be expected by October 31, 2026. Submitted manuscripts will undergo the usual JVDI peer-review process, with publication anticipated in Spring 2027. Page charges of $75/printed page will apply—there are no color page charges for online-only publication.
Please submit your abstract to guest editors Dr. Leyi Wang, leyiwang@illinois.edu
or Dr. Melissa Macias-Rioseco, mmaciasrioseco@ucdavis.eduYour copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?
Create a great offer by adding words like "free," "personalized," "complimentary," or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take action, so consider inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
