Laboratory Diagnosticians' News Matters | |
On February 1st, we had our Winter in-person board meeting that was linked to the quality training and Accreditation Committee meeting. The Accreditation Committee continues to work on its ISO-17011 accreditation, which will be a huge leap forward for AAVLD-accredited laboratories.
AAVLD leadership is working on the next step in our collaboration with USDA and NVSL for workforce development and we will be sure to communicate what priorities will be the initial focus and how we plan to move forward. It is great to see that the Summer Symposia planning is almost complete and that it will focus on the professional development of microbiologists in our member laboratories. Look for more information to come soon from AAVLD and NVSL.
It feels like last month when we were all in Nationa Harbor, MD for our annual meeting. Planning for 2024 started in December and is moving along very well with Dr. Tanya LeRoith, our President-elect and program chair for the Nashville meeting. Watch your inboxes for the call for abstracts and deadlines for submission and award consideration.
Lastly, the Government Relations Committee, chaired by Dr. Bruce Akey and Dr. Pat Halbur will be meeting in DC with our USAHA partners for two days in March. The 2024 Farm Bill is a top priority for all our stakeholders and partners, and we are sure to discuss many other initiatives to further animal and public health with AAVLD and NALHN. Please let us know if you have questions!

Governor Shapiro Recognizes Exemplary Commonwealth Employees for Outstanding Achievements and Dedication to Public Service
October 23, 2023
PRESS RELEASE
| |
Harrisburg, PA – Today, Governor Josh Shapiro presented the Governor’s Awards for Excellence to 54 Commonwealth employees from eight state agencies and thanked all state employees for their dedication to public service.
“I’ve said many times before, my Administration has a ‘get stuff done’ attitude.
We focus on getting stuff done for the good people of Pennsylvania – and that’s only possible because of the 80,000 Commonwealth employees who go to work every day to serve,” said Governor Josh Shapiro. “Whether it was our Avian Flu Veterinary Response Team’s immediate response to the avian flu crisis, or our Next Generation 911 team’s work to modernize our 911 systems across all 67 counties, or our Pennsylvania State Police Troopers putting their lives on the line to keep our fellow Pennsylvanians safe – these individuals stepped up to lead in the face of challenges and delivered tangible results to make a real positive difference in Pennsylvanians’ lives. I congratulate our honorees and thank them for their contributions, dedication, and commitment to service.”

Diagnostic Immunohistochemistry of primary and secondary central nervous system neoplasms of dogs and cats, RIssi et al.
Abstract. The diagnosis of primary and secondary CNS neoplasms of dogs and cats relies on histologic examination of autopsy or biopsy samples. In addition, many neoplasms must be further characterized by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for a more refined diagnosis in specific cases. Given the many investigations assessing the diagnostic and prognostic IHC profile of CNS neoplasms in the veterinary literature, it may be difficult for the diagnostic pathologist or pathology trainee to narrow the list of reliable diagnostic IHCs when facing a challenging case. Here we compile a comprehensive list of the most diagnostically relevant immunomarkers that should be utilized for the diagnostic support or confirmation of the most common primary and secondary CNS neoplasms of dogs and cats.
