Before going on recess, the House passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the government open until December 4, thereby avoiding the threat of a shutdown on October 1.
On August 2, Senate leadership introduced their own CR text. The Senate bill includes language to delay implementation of the uniform guidance until at least December 11, when the CR expires. The uniform guidance, from the Office of Management and Budget, would allow political appointees to review all federal grants.
The House will review this language and the longer time frame when they return in September.

Jonathan Levine, DVM, DACVIM, was appointed treasurer of the AAVMC Board of Directors on July 15.
Levine is Dean of the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine.

Making Room for Curiosity, in the Classroom and the Lab
Young children ask questions about everything, with parents and family members filling in the gaps in their understanding. Ask any parent about their toddler, and they will tell you how quickly the endless “But why?” can wear you down. As children grow older, they sadly learn to stop asking so many “annoying” questions. Instead, most begin to focus only on asking the “right” ones, or they stop asking altogether for fear of being wrong. By the time they reach veterinary school, many students have learned that it feels safer to stay quiet in the back of the room than to let their peers see what they don’t know. As a veterinary educator, I have seen this pattern too often: talented students who would rather stay silent than risk looking less capable than they are.
That instinct to protect ourselves by staying quiet is the opposite of what our profession needs. Curiosity isn’t just the engine behind great research — it’s a habit of mind we have to actively protect and teach, in the classroom as much as in the lab. That challenge is exactly why my latest trip with AAVMC was such a joy...
