Corporate Sponsor Highlight

AAa/e appreciates the support of Ninyo & Moore!

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), Terminal 1.5

In 2022, Ninyo & Moore earned the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) California Honor Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) for the design of Terminal 1.5 at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Ninyo & Moore provided geotechnical engineering for the design of Terminal 1.5, which is a new five-story structure with a footprint spanning 63,400 square feet between the existing Terminals 1 and 2. The active Central Outfall Sewer (COS) line, which is a roughly 6-foot diameter, brick-and-mortar pipeline, originally constructed in the 1930’s, is located in the area between Terminals 1 and 2. Due to the location of the COS line, when Terminal 1 was constructed in the early 1980’s, in preparation for the 1984 Olympic Games, it was done as an independent and isolated structure. While preparing for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, it was determined necessary for the team to design the new Terminal 1.5 over the active COS line. Final design recommendations for a unique foundation system, consisting of sleeved cast-in-drilled-hole piles and torque down piles, were developed to achieve the project’s loading requirements. The geotechnical engineering that was not attempted in the early 1980’s was successfully executed nearly 40 years later. This engineering achievement was accomplished by extensive studies of the underground conditions, field testing of pilot piles for the deep foundation system components that were not available in the 1980’s, as well as full-scale field load testing at the site.

Ninyo & Moore, a California Corporation, is a minority-owned multidisciplinary consulting firm that specializes in providing geotechnical and environmental services.
