We are pleased to share that the ABC-AHP-NCNPR Botanical Adulterants Prevention Program (BAPP) has published its 100th peer review. The review, based upon 2,235 commercial turmeric (Curcuma longa) products reported in 48 publications, was published in the journal Pharmaceutical Biology. Written by Stefan Gafner, PhD, chief science officer of ABC; Nilüfer Orhan, PhD, research scientist at ABC and BAPP; Çiğdem Kahraman, PhD, assistant professor of pharmacognosy at Hacettepe University in Ankara, Türkiye; and Mark Blumenthal, founder and executive director of ABC, the review provides laboratory assessments of the identity and authenticity of turmeric products, including whole or powdered rhizomes/roots and non-standardized or curcumin-standardized extracts.
According to the review, 448 (~20%) of the tested turmeric ingredients and products were considered to be adulterated, with adulteration slightly higher in turmeric dietary supplements (22.0%) than in turmeric sold as spice (20.4%). To note, the review was written in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines and based on analysis of turmeric adulteration literature from Google Scholar, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science databases.
