An expected dual assault of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and seasonal influenza this winter has prompted public health officials and vaccine manufacturers to increase flu vaccine production by millions of doses to meet the expected surge in demand. Major flu vaccine manufacturers have said they plan to boost production by about 10 percent, to about 189 million doses, up from 170 million doses last year.
Even with the increase in production, many types of seasonal flu vaccine are expected to be in short supply as early demand, driven by extensive pre-orders, is resulting in some vaccines selling out faster than usual. However, some flu products are still available through AmerisourceBergen's ASD Healthcare Division, which is now an authorized flu vaccine distributor.
