Regional AmCham MENA Conference



March 14th - 15th - The Regional Council of American Chambers of Commerce in the Middle East and North Africa's two-day conference, titled "Building for the Future: Realizing Economic Transformation Beyond COVID-19", began on Monday, March 15, 2022, in Amman.


The conference, held at the St. Regis Amman by the American Chamber of Commerce in Jordan, aimed to focus on the partnership between the business communities in the Middle East, Africa, the Arab Gulf states, and the United States in order to accelerate economic recovery and support economic reforms toward inclusive and sustainable economic growth. Kuwait/US Economic Forum



March 15 - "The U.S Chamber's U.S.-Kuwait Business Council, in partnership with the Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA), hosted Part II of the U.S.-Kuwait Economic Forum earlier this month. This followed the first forum held on January 19. During this forum, the U.S. and Kuwait governments provided a readout from the fifth U.S.-Kuwait Strategic Dialogue that took place in late January and several companies spoke about business opportunities across the economy in Kuwait.


Pete Swift, Chairman of AmCham Kuwait, and Karthik Ramanathan, SVP of the Global Clients Division at State Street, which is Co-Chair of the U.S.-Kuwait Business Council, emphasized the importance of the longstanding bilateral relationship with the U.S. business community. Then Reem AlShaya, Director of the Legal Affairs Department at KDIPA, and Jim Holtsnider, Chargé D'Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Kuwait, shared readouts from the Dialogue, including from the subgroup meetings focused on Trade and Investment, Health, and Energy and Climate. They highlighted areas for continued and increased cooperation that were discussed, including intellectual property, defense, cybersecurity, infrastructure, renewable energy, and technology, among others. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to advancing our mutual interests in order to improve economic collaboration and create more opportunities for the private sector.


The focus turned to sector-specific discussions on defense and sustainability. In a fireside chat moderated by Retired US Army General John Nicholson, Chief Executive for Lockheed Martin Middle East, Brigadier General Darrin Slaten shared his perspective on the U.S.-Kuwait strategic defense partnership. Sandra Helayel, Director of Government Engagement in the Gulf and Levant for GE, then spoke on the future of sustainability in Kuwait and the global push towards decarbonization." -Steve Lutes, Vice Presient - Middle East Affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

March 16 - ABCK-AmCham Kuwait hosted a Webinar on Regional Intellectual Property Protection and Enforcement Updates. The event was organized by ABCK-AmCham Kuwait, and U.S. Intellectual Property Attaché Middle East and North Africa- Peter C. Mehravari; in collaboration with AmCham Dubai, AmCham Abu Dhabi, AmCham Qatar, AmCham Bahrain, AmCham Oman, and AmCham Saudi Arabia. 


The event was a success as it provided participants with informative updates about patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and counterfeits. The event also provided GCC AmChams with a chance to connect and discuss IP Protection and Enforcement updates within every country. Both members and non-members received information on how to protect their intellectual property and get acquainted with local IP regulations.


Mehravari concluded his talk by providing suggestions regarding intellectual property and offered his assistance to U.S. businesses that are planning to expand to Kuwait and the GCC region. The session closed with a Q&A from the audience.

March 21- The recently founded American International University hosted world-renowned artist- Kate Daudy. Daudy, a London-based artist recognized for her work exploring and re-evaluating the human experience in the context of the natural world, held an exclusive exhibition on the AIU campus. Along with Daudy’s special guest, Nobel Prize-winning physicist, and artist, Kostya Novoselov, Daudy presented, ‘At the Violet Hour’. The special VIP reception included private viewings of ‘All You Had to Do Was Ask’, ‘The Evolution Project’, and ‘Anything Can Happen’. Read more

March 23 - The ABCK-AmCham Kuwait's Women in Business Focus Group Members held a discussion with the American International School's students. AIS students asked questions to the panelists regarding the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals as well as questions in relation to their outlook on the current work environment for women around the world, as they tackled issues in relation to gender equity and equality. March 29 - Citibank Kuwait in Partnership with Kuwait Banking Association, the Women Mentor Forum and the American Business Council-AmCham Kuwait, invited women from different sectors in Kuwait to attend an event on Women Entrepreneurs in celebration of International Women’s Day

March 30 - ABCK - AmCham Kuwait hosted its 1st-ever Women in Business Diwaniya, sponsored and hosted by Jumeirah Hotels & Resorts Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa and in partnership with the U.S. Embassy Kuwait


Participants discussed the different resources available within the group and how these resources can be utilized to advance women’s economic growth in the country.


This initiative will continue to address women in Kuwait and their specific needs, spread awareness, design events for capacity building and network so that mutual success can be fostered.

‘Entry in Kuwait only for healthy expatriates’


KUWAIT CITY, March 23: MP Badr Al- Hamidi has submitted a proposal to amend the Foreigners Residency Law, which was referred to the Legal and Legislative Affairs Committee on Monday, reports Al-Seyassah daily. Al-Hamidi took this step about a year after he proposed cancellation of the residency permits of expatriates with chronic mental or neurological diseases, which usually take several years to be treated. KUWAIT: Kuwait’s Minister of Health Dr Khaled Al-Saeed encouraged the full return of students to schools, pointing out that this will be done in cooperation with the ministry of education. Kuwait main donor for building ‘Desert Storm’ memorial
