Nov 19 - AmCham Kuwait organized a beach clean-up with AmCham Members and Friends to collect plastics and other waste at the Kuwait Free-trade Zone as part of the Chamber's sustainability initiatives. As many of you know, this zone has several migratory birds that come around yearly, and it is important to continue maintaining the shoreline's cleanliness to enable better migration and conservation of our fauna.

Customs hikes fees by 100% for many services it provides – Bid to boost govt revenues


KUWAIT CITY, Nov 22: Within the framework of the government’s approach to re-pricing its services, and in order to increase public revenues, Al-Rai has learned from relevant sources that the General Administration of Customs has prepared with Ernst & Young a study to re-price its services, which included reviewing the fees of 65 certificates and forms.


According to the study, which considers the customs services the first source of income for the state in terms of non-oil revenues, it is proposed to increase the fees for some services by 100 percent, while others jumped 10 times. Read more...

Kuwait's al-Zour refinery starts commercial operations


The refinery is "a vital outlet for the disposal of heavy Kuwaiti oil and provides refined products for export in global markets with standard specifications", acting Kipic chief executive Waleed al Bader told state news agency Kuna.


Al-Zour will expand Kuwait's refining capacity to 1.415mn b/d from around 800,000 b/d when it reaches full capacity in 2023.


The project has faced repeated setbacks, first because of technical and logistical issues with contractors and more recently because of issues related to the Covid-19 pandemic. Kuwait had aimed to begin commissioning al-Zour in mid-2019 and have it fully operational by 2020. Read more...

MoI withdraws driving licenses of 10,000 expats


KUWAIT: The interior ministry has informed more than 10,000 expatriates about the cancellation of driving licenses they had obtained earlier, after a traffic department review concluded they do not meet the requirements for obtaining a driving license at the present time due to changing jobs or not meeting the minimum salary condition, which is a prerequisite for applying for a driving license.


“The notifications came as part of a continuous review of expatriates who hold driving licenses, a process that is still ongoing as ordered by the interior ministry, with the aim of verifying the validity of conditions as well as deal with traffic jams, as expatriates constitute the largest proportion of motorists,” sources revealed to Kuwait Times. CAPT postpones decision on KNPC’s request to award tender for tank cleaning and repair


KUWAIT CITY, Nov 29: The Central Agency for Public Tenders has postponed the decision on the request of the Kuwait National Petroleum Company to award the tender for tank cleaning and repair, fiberglass works and painting at the Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery and liquid gas production facilities to the bidding company with the second lowest price at 10.777 million dinars, until further study and to refer the matter to the technical sector, reports Al-Rai daily. PAM cancels annual increase of 50 KD salary cap on work permits


KUWAIT CITY, Dec 6: Public Authority for Manpower has canceled the increase of 50 KD salary cap per year for registration on work permits, reports Al Anba. The source stated that based on the public interest, the restriction on increasing the worker’s salary cap in the work permit specified at 50 dinars per year has been canceled. Increase in monthly salary entirely depends on agreement by the employer’s without any limits.

KUWAIT CITY: The list of the employees in the oil sector who have applied to sell their leave days includes both Kuwaiti citizens and expatriates, reports Al-Rai daily quoting informed sources. They said, “The number of workers in the oil sector who benefit from the sale of leave days ranges between 13,000 and 14,000. Law key to attract foreign investment


KUWAIT CITY, Dec 6: Business Environment Improvement Committee Chairman MP Abdulwahab Al-Essa disclosed that the panel met on Tuesday to discuss the factors leading to the minimal entry of foreign investments to the country with representatives of Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA) and Kuwait Direct Investment Promotion Authority (KDIPA). He said they agreed on the need for new legislation to address the issue and encourage foreigners to invest in the country. Pentagon Awards $9B in Cloud Computing Deals to Four Firms


The Pentagon announced Wednesday it has awarded $9 billion in cloud computing contracts to Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Oracle, after scrapping a previous deal during a dispute between two of those firms.


The Joint Warfighting Cloud Capability (JWCC) is a “multiple-award contract vehicle that will provide the DoD the opportunity to acquire commercial cloud capabilities and services directly from the commercial Cloud Service Providers,” the Pentagon said in a statement. Read more...

DOE Announces $43 Million To Support the Clean Energy Transition in Communities Across the Country



WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced $43 million for 23 projects to help communities plan their transition to a clean energy future and improve grid reliability and security. Twenty research projects will focus on increasing communities’ resilience to disruptions from extreme weather and other disasters, and three will focus on building tools to help communities better evaluate and benefit from local energy resources. Researchers will develop and share planning methodologies, tools, technologies, and best practices that can be replicated in communities across the country as they work to install clean energy and strengthen grid infrastructure.
