Message from the President

ABRF Colleagues,

Professional development is a cornerstone of ABRF membership. Our mission—to equip Shared Research Resource professionals with accessible, innovative tools that drive discovery—is reflected in everything we do. Whether we’re advancing technical and operational best practices, collaborating with peers, leaders, and commercial partners, or creating an inclusive community, these efforts all support your professional growth.

This professional growth often happens naturally over time. Every time you participate in a session, meet with a group or committee, and network among fellow ABRF members, you are enhancing your own skills and knowledge, which ultimately benefits your career as much as it leads to the success of your facility and your institution.

In addition, we aim to provide professional development opportunities in various formats to reach all our members, including new institutional members who may not yet be familiar with all that ABRF has to offer.

Monthly Group Mentoring Sessions

One of our regular, low-commitment opportunities to connect with other ABRF members is the group mentoring session, held on the third Tuesday of each month from 2-3 pm ET. This is an informal discussion where fellow ABRF members share ideas or suggestions on tackling a tricky situation or common challenge.

Structured One-on-One Mentoring Program

If you are interested in seeking or offering targeted guidance, ABRF has relaunched a structured one-on-one mentoring program. This program pairs mentees with experienced mentors for a specified amount of time and provides more personalized guidance through a mentoring relationship.

Skills-Focused Workshops

ABRF also offers skills-focused workshops, such as the Business Skills Workshop, at chapter events, the annual meeting, or even hosted at your own institution. These are interactive sessions that hone skills such as creating a business plan, budgeting, and setting rates.

Career Resources

Additional resources to ABRF members include posting and searching job openings and reviewing core-specific job families shared by institutions.

ABRF continues to expand and strengthen our professional development resources for our members. With the launch of our new strategic plan, we aim to develop a roadmap for shared research resource credentialing and engage with upper-level administration to increase the visibility of careers in shared research resources.

Regardless of your level of involvement, how often you participate, or where you are in your career, your engagement with ABRF will open doors to valuable knowledge and new networks that will benefit you professionally.

Kym Delventhal

ABRF President

Update on Proposed NIH Funding for FY2026

Courtesy of Research!America

On July 31, the Senate Appropriations Committee proposed a net $400 million increase over FY25 funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Other agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), were flat funded or received modest budget cuts. These proposed funding levels, which are dramatic improvements over the president’s FY26 budget recommendations, signal that members of Congress from both sides of the aisle recognize the significance of American research and public health security.

This proposal would also remove the universal 15% indirect cost rate for federal research included in the original budget recommendation.

The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to act on its version of the FY26 LHHS bill when lawmakers return to Washington following recess. The fiscal year deadline is Sept. 30.

ABRF will continue to provide updates on the status of federal research funding for NIH and other agencies.

Attention Prospective Sponsors! MWACD 2025 will continue our tradition of fostering maximum interaction by placing sponsors and attendees in a shared space. While the venue changes each year, this year’s location — the historic University of Wisconsin Memorial Union — offers a unique and welcoming atmosphere, with plenty of room for exhibit tables.

Sponsor table placement will be determined by sponsorship tier, and within each tier, in the order of registration. To ensure the best table location, we encourage you to register ASAP — only a limited number of sponsorship opportunities remain!
