Message from the President

Hello ABRFer’s
I hope everyone had a great Summer. I am excited to share that the groups that are often referred to as the “heart and soul” of the ABRF, our Research Groups, are planning at least six new exciting studies this year along with a number of ongoing projects.
Please note that all research groups have openings for new members. Participation in research groups is a great way to broaden your network and learn from others who share a similar role in their institution. If you are interested in participating in a research group, please contact us!
Now that the FDA has approved the Pfizer vaccine, please consider getting a COVID-19 vaccine (if you have not already done so) so we can meet face-to-face safely at the ABRF 2022 meeting in Palm Springs, March 27-30, 2022, and learn about the exciting new proposals our RGs will be presenting.
Kevin Knudtson
ABRF President

Special online workshop: Emotional and Social Intelligence (ESI)
Tuesday September 7, 1:00 – 3:00 pm ET
Content from Promega
These are storming times indeed: a global pandemic, political unrest, imminent climate change, a struggling economy and more. Our individual and collective stress levels have not been this high for such a prolonged period for decades. As a result, many people are finding it hard to maintain a sense of mental and/or emotional stability or even-keeled composure, aka equanimity. Emotional and social intelligence (ESI) is discipline that can give us proven tools to do this very thing, growing a sense of equanimity and calm even during extended periods of strain.

Member Spotlight: Ben Neely, NIST
Dr. Ben Neely is an analytical biochemist and bioinformatician with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST-Charleston). He first dabbled in mass spectrometry-based bottom-up proteomics in 2007 while studying metal-microbe interactions and hasn’t looked back since. His diverse background includes microbiology, wildlife disease, cancer biology, biomarker discovery and validation (protein and glycan) and bioinformatics. Before coming to NIST he worked at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Proteomics Center, and before that the MUSC Nephrology Proteomics Laboratory. Current research at NIST includes development of new materials for *omic applications, specifically focused on system suitability and quality. His other primary focus is emerging proteomic applications, specifically working with stakeholders to optimize and standardize methods for data-independent acquisition and metaproteomic analysis, as well as advancing and promoting proteomic capabilities in non-model organisms.
