Greetings!
Each year when Canada Day celebrations begin, I always reflect on my journey to Canada. Unlike those that are born here, those that want to be Canadians need to apply, answer some basic questions, go to court and receive a short speech from a judge along with their citizenship papers.
My day in court – citizenship court in Ponoka – was an exciting one. A lot of rights were bestowed on me – rights I didn’t even know existed. Individual rights are valued far more in Canada than in most countries. I am grateful for that.

Welcome to new board members
ABW has recently added two new directors to our Board. Already committed volunteers with ABW, they have now stepped into positions of leadership. ABW is grateful, and welcomes their expertise in their new roles.
Scott Sankey has been the project manager for Rwanda and has funded several ABW projects. A native Albertan, Scott has travelled much of the globe and divides his time between Calgary and Panama. He is passionate about helping people in need.
Mona Walls is a pediatric physiotherapist who has managed and monitored rehab work for ABW, travelling to both Kenya and Rwanda with the rehab team. Mona is currently the Chair of the Global Health Division of the Canadian Physiotherapists Association. She has been working for 34 years as a physiotherapist with 25 years in paediatrics.

ABW suffered a great loss this year when Arni Skortez, a founding donor, passed away. Arni and his family have supported numerous prominent projects since the beginning of ABW, 32 years ago. Arni, his wife Elvine and their two daughters travelled to Kenya in 2004, despite Arni’s reliance on a wheelchair.

Segera Clinic relocation underway
The new Segera Clinic in Laikipia County, Kenya, has begun construction of its first phase. The existing clinic at the mission, including the pharmacy, waiting room and delivery room, has been located in a residence hall, but serving the entire community.
|
|
The new clinic, located at the gates of the mission, will provide easier access for the community and eliminate some problems with the shared facility. During Covid-19 restrictions, some services to the community had to be limited. Even when the pandemic is over, keeping a clinic where communicable diseases are treated inside a residence is not a good practice.
The clinic is staffed and operated under agreements with local service providers.

For the 18th year, Lacombe Upper Elementary has fundraised for Kenya’s children, this time providing enough desks for a full classroom. The Peer Support program raised $652 for the project, which was matched by ABW. The combined $1300 will build 25 school desks.
