December 2020 Newsletter
Karen A. Wientjes, PT, DPT, MPH, CWS®
Well, we made it to December, and what a year this has been! While all of us have experienced unprecedented events this past year, I am sure we have also witnessed a lot of resilience, creativity, and compassion. I am grateful for Gayle Lindsey, PT, MBA, MHSM, CWS®, our immediate Past President, who navigated us through the virtual waters of 2020. With her leadership and the fantastic team at ABWM headquarters, we upheld our high standards for wound care certification. We attended our first virtual wound conferences and found new options to forge ahead with continuing education in the field.  We expanded our presence on social media with interactive posts to break up the week. And our Ambassadors continued to let colleagues know about the value of holding the CWCA®, CWS®, or CWSP® certifications.

Perhaps a silver lining in 2020 was more of an opportunity to prepare to certify or recertify. For others still contemplating certification, this may be the ideal time to boost your credentials and proudly showcase your knowledge in the field to your employers as well as your patients.

I am looking forward to the next two years serving as President of the ABWM. I bring over 25 years of experience in clinical wound management and academia and six years working on the Exam Committees. I am fortunate to be supported by a strong Board representing a wide range of health professionals in the field. These are some of the most dedicated, knowledgeable, and coolest people I know. I want to extend a warm welcome to the newest Board members, Robert J. Klein, DPM, FACFAS, CWS®, and Heather Schuster, PA-C, CWS®. Our Board works well together because we share similar values and goals for the field.

We at ABWM are looking ahead toward a productive 2021. Indeed, there will be challenges, overcoming them will make the work that much more meaningful.  We will continue to focus on delivering the highest quality certification exams in wound care. We also look forward to refining our website and making it easier for certified or seeking certified wound specialists to find what they need. Our strength is in the diversity of the healthcare professionals certified, all working toward a mutual goal of delivering optimal, informed care to our patients. Together we will persevere and discover new ways to communicate, demonstrate competence, and do what we do best. Please get in touch with us if you or a colleague wants to get more involved with the ABWM.  Be sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter!

On behalf of the ABWM, I wish you a peaceful and healthy holiday season. May you find the strength and the creativity to allow you to grow your passion. Know that we are here to support you on that quest.

“When you have exhausted all possibilities, remember this – you haven’t.” Thomas A. Edison

Congratulations to everyone who was recently certified! The ABWM would like to recognize all newly certified Associates and Diplomates who received their CWCA®, CWS®, or CWSP® credentials from September 1st through November 30th, 2020.

Renew Your Certification for 2021
The ABWM would like to remind all currently certified Associates and Diplomates that the 2021 certification renewal season has begun. If you have not done so already, please log-in to your ABWM account to ensure your email and mailing addresses are up to date. If you experience any issues logging into your account, please email us at [email protected]

The renewal fee is $150.00. We also require 6 hours of wound care related continuing education units to be entered in your ABWM account online. These CEUs must have been completed during the 2020 calendar year. Both the CEUs and the payment must received in order to complete your renewal.

If you have yet to complete your CEU requirement for 2020, check out ABWM Foundation's website where you'll find a number of free Zoom lectures on a variety of wound care topics.

This year, we have extended our annual renewal deadline from January 31st to March 31st, to provide additional flexibility due to COVID-19. As ABWM staff continue to work from home, we ask that Associates and Diplomates pay their renewal fees online, as there may be delays in check receipt and processing.
ABWM Ambassador Program
The ABWM Ambassador is searching for new volunteers for 2021! Our ABWM Ambassadors help us to further our brand awareness and educate our community of wound care professionals. This program is a great way to support ABWM in your local community and serves as a track to other ABWM volunteer opportunities, such as our Exam and Finance Committees, and the ABWM Board of Directors. In fact, three of our previous Ambassadors have gone on to serve on the ABWM Board of Directors. If you are interested in becoming an Ambassador for the 2021 calendar year, please reach out to [email protected].
Happy Holidays From ABWM!
Happy Holidays from the ABWM Board and Staff! Please note that the ABWM offices will be closed from December 24th to January 1st, inclusive. During this time, feel free to email us at [email protected] and a team member will get back to you as soon as possible.

Where possible, please complete annual renewal payments online in order to avoid delays in check processing, and submit any recertification or re-test forms via email. Please submit any first-time applications via USPS, UPS, or FEDEX, and avoid using certified mail as this will result in significant delays in application processing.

If you are planning to sit for your CWCA®, CWS®, or CWSP® exam in December/January, please check our test provider's website to ensure your local testing center is open at this time, as some locations have closed due to COVID-19:

Thank you and see you in 2021!
