Seahorse Optimist Regatta
|
|
This weekend, ABYC hosted the annual Seahorse Optimist Regatta. We had our Optimist High Performance, Optimist Championship, and Optimist Green Fleet Teams competing divided across two separate courses. The two days saw light and shifty winds, testing the competitors all around the course. The racing was intense, and sailors learned the hard way that it’s not over until you cross the finish line!
Over on the Championship course, in a fleet of 27 boats, the race committee did a brilliant job at running the IODA standard trapezoid course. This is a larger, more complex course that is used at international optimist competitions. This course consists of an upwind finish, making the fight for the lead incredibly interesting in the shifty winds we saw this weekend.
Going into the final race of the regatta there was a four-way tie for second place, and ABYC’s Callum Ruch was in contention. The last race was one for the books with several lead exchanges and a hard-fought finish. In the end, Callum Ruch finished 5th overall and 2nd in Red fleet, followed by Ollie Leheup 8th, Tiago Keilman 13th, Hayden Keilman 14th (and 2nd in white fleet), Elijah Pearson 15th, and Ollie Ruch (fresh out of green fleet) 23rd! Although we did not see any podiums overall, our team average was better than the week before, and we will be training hard up until Optimist CORK in two weeks!
The green fleet course saw 7 races over the course of two days in a fleet of 27 boats. Our sailors fought hard and had an amazing time at their third regatta experience. This regatta is the last of the summer season for the sailors still competing in green fleet, and we look forward to the fall season. We are incredibly proud of all of our sailors that competed at home on the weekend!

Seahorse Youth Regatta - Optimist Event was a Success!
|
|
The Seahorse Youth Regatta took place this past weekend with 51 Optimist racers from seven clubs participating on two separate courses for the Championship and Green fleets! Thank you to Dave Steenbergen (Principal Race Officer), Paul Brennan (RO, Championship Fleet), Molly Asseltine (organizer "extraordinaire" in pulling together RC teams for both days), and finally to our neighbour, THSC, who generously provided Shadow and a crew for the Green Fleet course (with thanks to Marjolyn van der Hart for requesting their support)! Thank you as well to Wendy Loat who was Chief Judge for this event, along with her team of Andrew Alberti, Peter Alberti, Dale King, Katie Nicoll, and Robert Stewart - we were truly so fortunate to have a wealth of experienced judges!
Furthermore, the entire Seahorse Organizing Committee (who had already spent months planning for this year) was onsite in full force ensuring that the pre- and post-racing activities were perfectly executed! Thank you to Jillian Ruch, Melanie Bruce (who also secured the plush animals that were given to racers - thank you!), Chris Ruch, and Sjoerd Hoogland for your tireless efforts! But it takes a village to pull off the "land component" of the event without a hitch and rounding out #TeamFlawless were the following volunteers many of whom have volunteered at ABYC youth regattas since 2016: Laura Goddard (scorer), Linda Gouge (team liaison), Jim Valentine (dockmaster), Steve Leheup (with thanks for creating the water filling stations AND the podium!), Sonia Leheup (team liaison), Tracy Kish (our nurse who was thankfully not needed!), Siobhan Keogh (ramps), as well as our incredible teenage volunteers (many of them current or former racers themselves) helping on ramps and/or doing "odd jobs" that you simply cannot plan for: Finley Edmunds, Kate Hamers, Annika Hoogland, Skyler Rock, and Caite Valentine!
Many thanks to Celia Lum who secured wonderful skin care products from Green Beaver to the delight of the racers, coaches and volunteers who received them! And the gorgeous photos from the event were shot by The Shooting Gallery Sports Photography and many more are available on Facebook and Instagram - one of which was shared by the CN Tower Instagram account (which has 64k followers)!
We have received many many compliments from participants throughout the weekend on how wonderful our event was - and it is all thanks to every.single.one.of.you! My deepest thanks to EVERYONE who supported this event including the ABYC membership!
We'll be doing this again on August 21/22 (Lasers) and August 28/29 (420/29er), so please keep us in mind if you are available to volunteer on either of those weekends!

Seahorse Regatta - Optis
We held Part 1 of our 3-part Seahorse Regatta this weekend, for the Optis. The weather on Saturday was not great, but we had wind and, mercifully, the worst part of the rain held off until we were back to shore. Sunday was much better, weather-wise, and the competitors had good racing over the course of the weekend. A lot of people stepped up to work on the Race Committee for this regatta:
Champions Course
Signal Boat: Paul Brennan, Max Smith, Alison Brannen, Helen Phillips
Pin/Mark Boats: Nick Bailey, Helene Cyr, Marjolyn Van der Hart, Paul Bark, Adam Rees, Eleanor MacKay
Finish Boat: John O'Dwyre (MCC), Laurel Greene (MCC), Allisen Brennan, Jim Prall
Opti Green Course
Signal Boat: Steve Brown (TH&SC), Richie Coutts (TH&SC), Phil Lange (TH&SC), Rebecca Crumlish, Roland Goddard
Mark Boat: Dave Steenbergen, Keagan Valentine
Huge thanks to you all for offering your time and energies for the kids. Well done.
Thanks also to Regatta Chair, Angie Law, and her crew for their considerations to the RC. It's always nice to know that one's efforts are appreciated.
The next 2 phases of the Seahorse Regatta are:
Aug. 21 & 22 - Lasers
Aug. 28 & 29 - 420s and 29ers
If you're up for helping with either of these, please let me know.

North American Championships - Clara Gravely
With the excitement last week of Sarah headed to Tokyo and the junior Teams doing so well in the Steerers and Four Sisters regattas, we neglected to celebrate ABYC's other Canadian Team member, Clara Gravely.
Clara was racing her ILCA 6 (formerly called Laser Radial) at the North American championships in San Francisco Bay at the St. Francis Yacht Club. If you have never been there, it is quite a spectacular venue. When the tide is flowing, you can practically pick up the take-out dinner you ordered from the club from the race course.
Clara sailed extremely well, and finished first among the Canadians, third among the women and fifth overall in the 75 boat fleet. Clara was first in three of the ten races. The event was won by Charlotte Rose, silver medalist behind Sarah at the Pan Am games in Peru.
I asked Clara to tell me a little about her experience.
"San Francisco Bay was one of the most exciting and challenging sailing venues I’ve raced at so far! Not only was it 15-25 knots every single day, there were tons of strategic factors at play like current relief, wind shadow, shifts, and even obstructions in the water. When the tide was coming in, you often had to sail all the way to shore, up to the wall of the Yacht Club, to get relief from the current dragging you down the course. This made for a lot of crowds and people screaming for room to tack before the wall! The venue was a great puzzle to work through every day and I learned a lot (and hiked a lot). I was super excited to have had some strong races and finish 5th!"
Congratulations to Clara Gravely on a great result!

This will be an easy "around the cans" pursuit-style race. Boats will receive staggered start times based on their PHRF ratings, i.e. the slower boats start first, followed by faster boats, with the fastest scratch boat starting last. The first boat to the finish wins.
Your PHRF handicap will be adjusted by adding 6 seconds each to the boat’s PHRF rating for:
1. Crew members under 12
2. Crew members over 70
3. Double-handed crew
4. Boats with no prior racing experience
If you're new to racing, this is a great race to compete in to get your feet wet.

Virtual New Boat Owner's Party - Member Spotlight
|
|
Neil Brereton
Hello there! After months of anticipation my wife Maz and I are delighted to be sailing our new-to-us Catalina 355, named Belfast Buoy. We are excited to become senior members at ABYC this year. We have been associate members for five years, having completed the Basic Cruising course with Diane Reid (who is just awesome!) and we have enjoyed sailing all the co-op boats during that time. Kudos to Diane, Emily and everyone else who makes the co-op program happen. We think it’s a fantastic program for the club. Everyone we have met at ABYC so far has been friendly, welcoming and helpful, and we look forward to meeting more members over the course of the season. We are berthed at Green Spine #22. Please stop by and say ’hello’.
