PGY2 TRAIN Rolls Into Anaheim!

The Anticoagulation Forum hosted its first ever exhibit hall booth at the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Anaheim, CA this week. The booth provided a great opportunity to promote the 8 sites currently recruiting Thrombosis and Hemostasis Management (THM) Residents for the ‘24-25 academic year.

Residency Program Directors also participated in Allison Burnett’s roundtable discussion on Stewardship and found some casual time to brainstorm the future of this remarkable training opportunity. More information on expansion of THM funding opportunities will be forthcoming, so be sure to follow future newsletter announcements and website updates!

Congratulations to Dr. Mark Crowther

AC Forum past president Dr. Mark Crowther recently received the title of Distinguished University Professor at McMaster University. Congratulations on the honor!

Did You Know...?

  • There is a significant relationship between the social determinants of health (SDOH) and risk factors for cardiovascular disease and atrial fibrillation (Afib).

  • SDOHs include factors such as economic stability, neighborhood & physical environment, educational attainment, food & nutrition, health care access & quality, and socialization & community.

How SDOHs Connect to Afib

Source: National Library of Medicine

Why is this important?

  • The death rate for cardiovascular disease among Black Americans is 20% higher than white Americans.
  • Minority racial and ethnic groups are at greater risk for Afib, but are undertreated with oral anticoagulation when indicated, often go undiagnosed, and are underrepresented in clinical trials.

What can we do?

  • Start the discussion—with the patient, with other team members to gain allyship, and with the general population to increase awareness.
  • If the patient is appropriate for DOAC therapy but cannot afford it, seek out patient assistance programs or other financial support.
  • Use electronic medical records to flag SDOHs for better care management.

The new 2023 Afib Guidelines highlight lifestyle and risk factor modification (LRFM) as a pillar of Afib management. SDOHs can negatively impact these risk factors, so it is important that providers strive to increase awareness and provide assistance when needed.

New SDOH Resource!

Social Determinants of Health are conditions found in the environments where we are born, learn, play, work, and age that affect our health and overall quality of life. Our new video emphasizes the crucial role of providers in understanding and addressing SDOHs to enhance patient care and achieve optimal health outcomes.
