Board Member Spotlight: Andrew Geller | |
Andrew Geller, MD, CDR USPHS
Chief Medical Officer, Medication Safety Program
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)
How did you become interested in the field of anticoagulation? In my residency, I became fascinated with the many medication changes made for patients before discharge – and anticoagulants seemed coolest to me since in those days all those patients needed close follow-up of INR levels! Then when I took a job as a medication safety epidemiologist at CDC, I learned more about the public health opportunities of improving safety while also expanding appropriate use to those who could also benefit from anticoagulation.
Do you have an ultimate career goal? I’d like to be the Chief Medical Officer of the US Public Health Service someday.
Do you have any hobbies? My 4 kids keep me busy, but I manage to follow all the Boston sports teams.
What is an interesting fact about yourself? I have a twin brother! (not identical).
Do you have any pets? No pets (just plants!)
What is your favorite family tradition? Ice cream cake MANDATORY for each family member’s birthday.
If you could meet any celebrity, who would it be and what would you do? Tom Brady, giggle.
Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without? Coffee.
Is there anything you wish would come back in fashion? Stamp collecting. I have all these stamps and my kids have no interest in this – they just want my baseball/hockey cards.
What is the most daring thing you’ve done? Arrived in a foreign country without a clear plan of where I was going to stay (I ended up recognizing someone on my plane and joined her and her mom for the first few days!)
Anything else you’d like to share? Thanks for all the work you do to improve anticoagulation for everyone!
