The Bat Mitzvah Turns 100!
March 18-19
As we plan to join Jewish communities around North America in celebrating the Bat Mitzvah @ 100, we want to hear from you, our Ansche Chesed members. Please consider sharing a short story, reflection or photo from your bat mitzvah. Whether it’s been 5 years or 50 years, we’d love to hear from you. The form for memory submissions and bat mitzvah photos can be found here.
Bat Mitzvah at 100: Women's Hagba Workshop
Saturday, March 19
After Sanctuary Services, approx 12:30PM
Have you ever wanted to do Hagba, but you're afraid that you'll drop the Torah? Worried that you aren't strong enough? Join us after Sanctuary services for a hands-on Hagba Workshop, for anyone who identifies as a woman. We will practice doing Hagba on our lighter weight Torahs, on the Shabbat when the Torah is rolled to the exact center of the scroll!

COVID Protocols
We have updated our protocols as the Covid outlook improves:
Attendance: We are no longer requiring preregistration to attend Shabbat services. There is no maximum attendance limit. However, please do not attend if you have any symptoms of illness.
Vaccination: Attendees should have received all vaccines for which they are eligible, including booster shots. Children under age 5 (who are not yet eligible for vaccination) may attend, and should be closely supervised. Children over the age of 2 must wear a well-fitting mask.
Proof of Vaccination: As of this Friday (March 18th), we will no longer require proof that attendees have received all vaccines for which they are eligible. We will be employing the "honor system," and trust that our community will continue to guard the health of others, as we have learned to do over the past two years.
Masks: We continue to follow the recommendations of our medical advisors, and ask that everyone continues to wear masks while in the synagogue building. Those leading prayers, reading Torah or taking speaking roles can remove their masks while leading. Masks can also be removed while eating during Kiddush. We will revisit our mask policy in late-March.
Social Distancing: The Sanctuary pews near the windows and in the balcony are available for any attendees who would like to maintain social distance.
Ventilation: Windows will be open in the davvening spaces.
Thank you to our staff, officers, and especially our medical advisors for helping us develop these policies, which necessarily will evolve as conditions change.

Security
Safety at Ansche Chesed is paramount to the Board and clergy. We’re scheduling a presentation by the Secure Community Network (SCN) for our community and hope to have those details soon.
In the meantime, we encourage you to watch this video which presents important strategies for surviving a violent incident. It’s important to remember that the risk of violence is lower in a house of worship than in other places where we spend time. The lessons presented by SCN and in this video are useful wherever you find yourself.

Want to Get Involved in Ansche Chesed Leadership?
The Nominating Committee is looking for people who would like to be considered to serve on the synagogue's Board of Trustees. Board members serve on one or two committees, reach out to community members on a regular basis, serve as Shabbat greeters, and make strategic decisions about how AC can realize our sacred mission. For consideration, please contact Brad Rothschild, chair of the Nominating Committee, at rothschildb@gmail.com.

Thank You to Our Amazing Volunteers!
We HUGELY appreciate the dedicated volunteers who have so generously given time, money, and effort to enable us to host fun Purim celebrations for all! In particular, we thank those who staffed our Purim Carnival to raise critical funds for our Hebrew School, and who shopped for, transported, and bagged Mishloach Manot gifts for the entire membership. Thank you!

Ansche Chesed Refugee Assistance
|
|
ACRA will be welcoming a new refugee case to New York in the coming week. A single man from Myanmar will be arriving in New York on Wednesday—yes, Wednesday! We will help him settle in temporary housing and then seek a permanent home for him. He will be joined by his brother sometime later, and a third male relative as well.
WE NEED SCHLEPPERS, SHOPPERS, AND OTHERS who can jump on this NOW. We are also looking for a Burmese speaker who can help translate. Interested? Reach out to us! Please email all three of us:
Deep thanks to the team leaders for jumping in so quickly and enthusiastically—Neal Smith, Dave Goldstein, & Jane Gavronsky! You inspire us and we are grateful!

New Neighbors Partnership
|
The Ansche Chesed Refugee Assistance team has had many inquiries about donations of children's clothing. While our needs are small at this time, here's a wonderful opportunity to assist refugee families who need kids' clothing.
We'd like the AC community to know about New Neighbors Partnership, a local not-for-profit that matches refugee and asylum-seeking families with local New York City families who have slightly older kids and can pass on hand-me-down clothing donations on a regular basis. This initiative provides ongoing support to families who usually receive (at most) three months of government agency assistance when they first arrive in the United States.

Ansche Chesed is pleased to announce it has joined with other New York synagogues and communal organizations in an initiative called What Matters: Caring Conversations About End of Life. This effort aims to heighten awareness around the importance of completing advance care directives, and enable individuals to thoughtfully consider and document their end of life preferences, with opportunities to engage Jewish values as part of the process. Confidential conversations are conducted by trained and certified Ansche Chesed facilitators, who are available to answer important questions and help walk you through the process, clarifying your goals and wishes for future healthcare and related choices in case you are unable to speak for yourself.
We look forward to working with you on this important initiative. Should you wish to schedule a conversation, please eMail, whatmatters@anschechesed.org, or leave a message at (212)865.0600 x201, and we will be in touch with you as soon as possible.

Rodeph Sholom Virtual Panel Discussion on Voting Rights
|
Many Americans are deeply pessimistic about the future of our democracy. The right to vote – one of our most fundamental civil liberties – is being challenged for many segments of our population, with the greatest impact on communities of color. This panel will share the history of voting rights, describe current litigation to protect that right and discuss the impact of redistricting. The panelists are all experts in their fields and will suggest ways that volunteers can help to protect voting rights for all.
