This year's nine winners are experts in M&A, compliance, human resources, and a slew of other company segments as their roles have continued to evolve to include other aspects of their respective company's overall strategy. The award recipients were selected with the help of a group of ACC STL members along with the Business Journal's editorial team.

The Biggest Year Yet for U.S. Privacy Laws is Around the Corner
By: Billee McAuliffe, Melissa Powers, and Cassidy Kolaz of Lewis Rice LLC
|
|
2023 is proving to be an important year in the privacy world. As of July 2022, five states - California, Virginia, Colorado, Utah and Connecticut - have enacted comprehensive privacy laws designed to increase protections for consumers’ personal data and provide consumers with certain rights to control their personal data. California’s law, the California Consumer Rights Act of 2020 (CPRA), which amends the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA), and Virginia’s law, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection Act (VA CDPA), each will take effect January 1, 2023. Colorado’s law, the Colorado Privacy Act (ColoPA), and Connecticut’s law, the Connecticut Act Concerning Personal Data Privacy and Online Monitoring (CT DPA), will both take effect July 1, 2023. Utah’s law, the Utah Consumer Privacy Act (UCPA), will take effect December 31, 2023.
Applicability
The first question to consider is whether these laws apply to your business. As each of the laws have different jurisdictional criteria, the answer may vary by state.

ACC St. Louis Fur Babies!
-
Owner:
- Aaron Mutnick, Legal Risk Manager, Amazon
-
What is your pet's name?
- Buddy
-
How did you get your pet?
- Buddy was adopted in Waco, Texas because, out of all the puppies in the shelter, he wasn't trying to chew everything. Little did we know that he was docile because he was infested with worms, and, that once he felt better, antique furniture would be his favorite snack.
-
What is the funniest/most memorable thing that your pet has done?
- The most memorable and most expensive, and definitely not the funniest, thing that Buddy has done was eat a part of a bed sheet when we were gone on a vacation, which required an emergency surgery.
-
What is the best thing about your pet?
- The best thing about Buddy is that when he's not eating foreign objects, he loves people and will do everything he can to take a nap on them.
We would love to feature more of our ACC St. Louis members' pets in our social media communication, so we're asking interested parties to send a jpg photo to accstl@qabs.com with answers to some of the questions above!
While not all submissions are able to be featured, we will do our best to give your favorite pet his or her day in the sun!

Immigration Law Updates That In-House Counsel Need to Know
By: Melanie Keeney and Luke Phillips of Tueth Keeney Cooper Mohan & Jackstadt P.C.

From work authorization issues to I-9 compliance standards, immigration law has significant legal and practical implications for large and small businesses. As you likely know, handling immigration issues in the workplace is often complex, due to the ever-changing legal landscape. Particularly in a time of labor shortages, it is crucial to understand the rules affecting foreign-national workers. In addition, recent changes described below, have opened the possibility for employing foreign nationals in various categories. With that in mind, we have provided the following update on “hot” topics to assist you in issue spotting important changes and updates that may impact your organization.
1. Premium Processing Now Available for Certain Employment-Based “Green Card” Petitions
For many years, we have waited for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) to allow for premium processing of immigrant visa applications for Multinational Executives and Managers. Processing times have been taking 1-1 ½ years for regular processing. We are happy to report that USCIS is now implementing a premium processing option for these E13 (“EB-1C”) Multinational Executive and Manager petitions. USCIS is phasing in the program, and currently petitions that were filed on or before March 1, 2021, may be “upgraded” to premium processing.[i] Starting August 1, 2022, USCIS will allow petitions received on or before July 1, 2021 to be premium processed. USCIS has guaranteed that such EB-1C petitions will be processed within 45 days of receiving the requests.[ii] The filing fee for premium processing of these petitions is $2,500.
