President's Message:
By: 2022 ACC St. Louis Chapter President
Kate Krebel, Vice President, Corporate Counsel, Leonardo DRS, Inc.
|
Welcome back to work! I hope you are all returning to your computer following an enjoyable weekend of celebration and appreciation. We are more than halfway through our 35th year of the St. Louis Chapter of the Association of Corporate Counsel. First, let me thank and recognize our members for your involvement, and our sponsors for your generosity and partnership. My appreciation extends further to our Board for its dedicated leadership of our Chapter. It is because of each of you that we continue to be recognized for our achievements on a national level.
Like many of you, this holiday break offered an opportunity to spend time with family, and perhaps also a chance to reflect on how to best address new challenges. The importance of these challenges are daily underscored by the devastating loss of life and freedom in Ukraine, economic volatility as well as the fatigue of ongoing COVID impacts to name a few. All of these examples have very real impacts for each and every one of us, our families, and the companies we represent.

Russian Sanctions:
Compliance Considerations for Global Companies
Across Multijurisdictional Sanctions Regimes
|
|
By: Jennifer Schwesig,
Partner at Armstrong Teasdale
|
|
With new and rapidly changing sanctions amid the Russia-Ukraine crisis, companies doing business in both the U.S. and other countries face greater challenges than simply complying with sanctions in their “home” country. For multinationals, sanctions compliance necessitates considering the simultaneous application of varied and potentially conflicting sanctions regimes. Adding to this challenge is the fact that U.S sanctions laws (as well as those of other countries) can apply to activities occurring outside of the U.S. or by non-U.S.-based companies or individuals. Given the historically far-reaching nature of U.S. sanctions regimes (such as the Iranian and Cuban embargos), the U.S. typically has taken a more comprehensive approach. As a result, it made sense for U.S.-based companies to focus more heavily on compliance with U.S. sanctions, especially given the level of exposure and associated penalties. While the expansive U.S. approach provides a model for compliance by placing emphasis on adherence to the stricter U.S. standards, there have been many instances where extraterritorial enforcement of U.S. sanctions regimes results in violations of other countries’ laws or vice versa, making compliance challenging.

Congratulations to ACC St. Louis Member, Krista S. Peyton,
on Her Judicial Appointment!

The Association of Corporate Counsel St. Louis Chapter (ACC STL) congratulates member Krista S. Peyton on her appointment as associate circuit judge for the 21st Judicial Circuit in St. Louis County by Governor Michael L. Parson. Judge Peyton was sworn in to office by Judge Mary Ott on January 7, 2022, and, after attending the Supreme Court of Missouri's New Judge School, began hearing a full civil docket on February 7 in Division 41. On any given day Judge Peyton can touch over 200 cases ranging from breach of contract to landlord tenant matters and trials de novo that are appealed from small claims court. Judge Peyton also is a co-signor for traffic commissioners and must review and approve their orders for driver's license revocations.
Prior to her appointment Judge Peyton served as the general counsel and chief contracting officer for the St. Louis Housing Authority. When asked about the contrast between her role in-house and the judiciary Judge Peyton noted that, "When you are in-house you are trying to guide the client to make the best choices within a legal framework and can have an isolated view, where as a judge I must have a broader global perspective." And in reflecting on what she's found rewarding about both positions Judge Peyton said that during her tenure at the Housing Authority she, "enjoyed working with a collective group of individuals, because when you are the general counsel you get to work with everybody because any legal issue that touches the entity means you are involved. As a judge I have enjoyed being in a decision making role and have enjoyed the wide spectrum of lawyers I get to work with and see every day."

ACC St. Louis Fur Babies!
|
|
-
Owner:
- Toni Douaihy, VP, Assistant General Counsel, Macy's, Inc.
-
What is your pet's name?
- Zoey
-
How did you get your pet?
- I adopted her when her puppy mom was no longer able to take care of her.
-
What is the funniest/most memorable thing that your pet has done?
- Since I started working from home, Zoey has been my most loyal coworker. In the morning, when I tell her it’s time for us to “go officing,” she gets super excited and runs upstairs to my office. Her first stop is the recliner by the window, where she oversees the street and stays on the lookout for other dogs and trucks. Then she asks me to put her bed on my desk and she keeps me company all day long.
-
What is the best thing about your pet?
- She loves for me to dress her up in cool sweaters when it’s chilly outside, and prances around like a tiny diva.

ACC STL Members Volunteer at Operation Food Search
|
|
On Friday, June 10, members from ACC-St. Louis and their families spent the afternoon with Operation Food Search helping out in the distribution and packing program. The Pro Bono / Community Service committee organized the event to help alleviate food insecurity in the St. Louis area. All together our volunteers organized 43 boxes of donated food items that will be sent to Operation Food Search partner food agencies across the St. Louis Metropolitan region. This food is then shared with families in need at no cost. Operation Food Search and its partner agencies help feed more than 200,000 people per month who are food insecure. The time we spent volunteering offset approximately $400 dollars that Operation Food Search can use for other programs.
Operation Food Search has numerous volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups from the sorting and packing at the distribution center that we did, to putting together backpacks of food for school children to be distributed directly to children who need it. If you’re interested in volunteering for Operation Food Search, please let us know at accstl@qabs.com, as we are planning another event for later in the year! You can find more information on Operation Food Search and how to help at the following website: operationfoodsearch.org.
