The Alberta Chambers of Commerce (ACC)—in coordination with the Canadian and other provincial and territorial chambers of commerce—is urgently calling for government to immediately block commercial rent evictions.
"The delay in the CECRA program implementation, when combined with delays in other programs (such as the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy), will tragically lead to May 1 rent payments pushing some small businesses over the financial cliff," the letter reads. "To that end, on behalf of our members and small businesses across the country, we implore you to immediately execute an order to block commercial evictions for a period of at least two weeks."
The Alberta Chambers of Commerce has sent the letter to Premier Jason Kenney and Economic Development Minister Tanya Fir.
"Albertans haven't had to worry about losing their homes during this unprecedented economic period, thanks to government stepping in and halting residential evictions," says ACC President and CEO Ken Kobly. "Local businesses shouldn't have to worry about losing their homes either. Small businesses are a vital part of our communities and we would be much poorer without them."
