Changes to COVID-19 testing eligibility

Daily PCR testing volumes are beginning to exceed system capacity. PCR testing eligibility will now be focused on those who have clinical risk factors for severe outcomes and those who live and work in high-risk settings.

Accelerated Tech immigration pathway

The Accelerated Tech Pathway will provide a fast track to permanent residence for highly skilled tech professionals who want to live and work in Alberta. It is part of the Alberta Immigrant Nominee Program, a federal-provincial program that nominates individuals for permanent residence in Alberta if they have skills to fill job shortages or are planning to buy or start a business in Alberta.

Mentoring newcomers for success in Alberta’s workforce

Funding of $1 million is available to help newcomers access mentorship opportunities to build their careers and further diversify Alberta’s economy. The Alberta Immigrant Mentorship Innovation Grant supports organizations in delivering career mentorship programs that help newcomers find meaningful employment based on their work experience, education and skills.

Government extends loan forgiveness repayment deadline for the Canada Emergency Business Account

The Government of Canada announced that the repayment deadline for CEBA loans to qualify for partial loan forgiveness is being extended from December 31, 2022, to December 31, 2023, for all eligible borrowers in good standing.

The Government of Canada announced a call for proposals for new projects under the Women Entrepreneurship Ecosystem Fund, one of the initiatives of the $6 billion Women Entrepreneurship Strategy (WES).

Commissioner for Employers newsletter & EI reform consultations

The Commissioner for Employers office has released its first newsletter.

Consultations on Employment Insurance reform will continue in January and February 2022 with a series of virtual provincial and territorial roundtables. This will be followed by national thematic roundtables on the Premium Reduction Program and seasonal benefits in February. A concluding national roundtable is scheduled for mid February.
