A poll of almost 500 business operators by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce shows 46 per cent anticipate expanding the size of their workforce over the next year. Only five per cent expect staffing levels to shrink.

“It just speaks to the fact that we’re a bit of a cyclical province,” Alberta Chambers of Commerce CEO Shauna Feth said Tuesday in an interview with the Calgary Herald.

September 19th Declared a Provincial Day of Mourning

Alberta has declared Monday, Sept. 19 a provincial day of mourning in solemn recognition of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

Albertans are invited to participate in an outdoor ceremony in honour of Her late Majesty at the Alberta legislature at 10 a.m. on Sept. 19, the day of her funeral in London, that will begin with a moment of silence. Workplaces, schools, offices and retail stores are encouraged to also observe the moment of silence.

The date is not a statutory holiday in Alberta, but employers are encouraged to make accommodations for employees.

Bivalent booster rollout to begin for those 18+

The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine triggers a stronger immune response and provides additional protection against both Omicron and the original SARS-CoV-2 virus strain.

Albertans who have completed a primary series are eligible for the bivalent vaccine. The recommended interval between doses is a minimum of five months from the last dose or previous infection.

Calgary construction industry sees job growth despite provincial losses

Edmonton Federal Building to be renamed the "Queen Elizabeth II Building"

The Federal Building, located on the northeast corner of the legislature grounds, will be officially named the Queen Elizabeth II Building.

The renaming of the building was originally planned to recognize the Platinum Jubilee of Her late Majesty.

Reducing Red Tape for Oil Service Rigs

The governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan, along with industry stakeholders, have secured a regulation exemption from Ottawa that will allow oil service rigs to move freely between the two provinces.

 Under the new Motor Vehicle Transport Act exemption, service rig convoys will not be required to complete daily logs or have a certified electronic logging device.

 Service rigs will continue to have robust safety checks in place, such as the need to have valid permits, regular inspections and to comply with all occupational health and safety requirements.

The Honourable Mary Ng, Minister of International Trade, Export Promotion, Small Business and Economic Development, spoke with Yulia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine on the margins of the G7 trade and investment ministers’ meeting hosted in Neuhardenberg, Germany.

Minister Ng reiterated Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine as it secures its future as a stable, democratic and prosperous country. She reinforced Canada’s commitment to continue working closely with G7 partners to hold Russia to account for the global security and humanitarian crisis caused by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked and unjustifiable invasion of Ukraine and associated campaign of disinformation.
