Virtual Event: Walking together towards the future

Today, September 29, 2022, we were joined by two excellent speakers from the Indigenous community for a conversation about indigenous culture, inclusivity, and economic frameworks. We thank Elder Marcel Paul and Marcel Arcand for their time and commitment to spreading understanding and awareness among Chambers and the business community.

CCC Response to Discussion Document on Options to Cap and Cut Oil & Gas Sector Greenhouse Gas Emissions

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce opposes the directions being considered to curb oil and gas sector emissions.

"While the Government of Canada has made significant strides to supporting industrial decarbonization, such as the introduction of carbon capture tax incentives and the Net Zero Accelerator Initiative, the options presented in the discussion paper are not supported by the Canadian Chamber. "

Improving Alberta’s driver licensing system

Nearly half a million Alberta drivers will benefit from the elimination of the Class 5 and Class 6 advanced road tests under the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program.

Grants are available to help honour the memories of workers who died due to workplace incidents, illnesses or injuries.

The Workers’ Memorial Grant will provide matching funds to organizations to create physical memorials for fallen workers. Memorials must be a physical structure such as a statue, plaque, garden, mural or commissioned piece of art.

Providing Albertans with job-ready skills

Advanced Education will invest $8 million over the next two years to fund new micro-credential programs. These short-term programs will create new opportunities for unemployed and underemployed Albertans to quickly re-skill or upskill in our changing economy.

Modernizing primary health care

Alberta’s primary health care leaders and national and global experts are being brought together to identify immediate and long-term improvements to strengthen Alberta’s primary health care system.

Three advisory panels are being established as part of Modernizing Alberta’s Primary Health Care System (MAPS) to identify primary health care improvements in the short term and over the next five to 10 years.

Creating more opportunities for apprenticeships

As part of the Alberta at Work initiative, Alberta’s government is investing $15 million over three years to expand apprenticeship education at post-secondary institutions across the province. This investment will increase hands-on learning and mentorship opportunities for various programs and create additional seats in existing apprenticeship programs.

Fuel tax savings quarterly update: Minister Nixon

“For the next three months, Albertans will continue to benefit from the province’s fuel tax relief program. Effective Oct. 1, Albertans will save 8.5 cents on every litre of gas and diesel every time they fill up at the pump."

Natural gas rebate program ready to protect Albertans

Starting Oct. 1, Alberta’s natural gas rebate program will provide price protection from spikes in natural gas costs for millions of Albertans this winter.

If the monthly default natural gas rate from any of the regulated utility providers (ATCO Gas North and ATCO Gas South, as served by Direct Energy Regulated Services, or Apex Utilities) goes above $6.50 per gigajoule, the government will provide rebates to all eligible consumers that month covering the difference between $6.50 and the highest regulated rate.

Canada news

The Siksika Nation and the governments of Alberta and Canada have reached a deal allowing the nation to take over policing responsibilities from the RCMP, creating Canada’s first self-administered First Nation police service in 14 years.

Over 50 communities to receive broadband funding

The governments of Canada and Alberta are investing $70.6 million to connect more than 10,400 homes across the province to high-speed internet.

Alberta’s government is committed to eliminating the digital divide and ensuring that all Albertans have access to reliable, high-speed internet. This is the first funding allocation by the governments of Alberta and Canada for projects that qualify for the Universal Broadband Fund (UBF).

Challenging the federal firearms confiscation program

On Aug. 19, the federal minister responsible for the RCMP requested that Alberta provide resources starting this fall to confiscate 30,000 firearms. Alberta is not legally obligated and has informed Ottawa it will not offer assistance.

The Alberta Chambers of Commerce is a federation of 116 community-based chambers of commerce representing more than 22,500 job creators.
