How to Improve the Efficiency, Capacity, Reliability and Resilience
of the Electric Power Grid with ACCC® Conductor
CTC Global
ACCC® News - January 2021
Quick Update:

There are currently 52 active ACCC® Conductor installations underway and 74 additional ACCC Conductor installations scheduled to start in the next few months, in addition to over 850 completed. Why? Because the ACCC Conductor offers the ability to improve the efficiency, capacity, reliability and resilience of the electric power grid, worldwide, while saving time, money and the environment.

NEA Completes 1st ACCC® Conductor Installation in Nepal

With the support of Mudbhary and Joshi Construction pvt, Ltd., Nepal Electric Authority (NEA) completed upgradation of their 33 kV Dhalkebar to Mujeliya Line in Nepal. NEA selected 242 kcmil Silvassa size ACCC® Conductor to replace ACSR Dog size conductor.

The ~22 circuit kilometer double circuit line used 144 kilometers of ACCC Conductor provided by Apar Industries Ltd. The reconductor project used existing steel lattice structures with ~130 meter spans without modification. There were a few longer spans over waterways and highways.

The primary drivers of the project were to increase line capacity to serve growing demand in the Janakpur (Mujeliya) Area and improve system reliability. The project was funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) under their South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation Power System Expansion Project.

ACCC® Hardware for the project was provided by Sicame India. Tesmec TSE FRS 400 tensioners and ARS 400 pullers were used. ACCC® Master Installer Mr. Wangdi Sherpa from Apar Industries Ltd provided training and installation support. The installation went very smoothly, but securing outages was challenging due to load constraints in this densely populated region.
SCE Uses ACCC® Conductor to Mitigate Sag and Increase Capacity on the Big Creek Transmission Corridor

In 2016, CPUC gave SCE approval to mitigate sag clearance issues and increase emergency line capacity from 936 amps to 1520 amps on the 230 kV Rector to Vestal lines (1&2) and on the 230 kV Vestal to Magunden lines (1&2) in the Big Creek Transmission Corridor.

The use of the ACCC® Conductor enabled SCE to minimize the need to modify or replace existing structures on the 137 circuit mile project which saved time, money and the need for special permitting. SCE selected 714 kcmil Dove size ACCC Conductor. The upgraded lines also eliminated load shedding during low-hydro conditions.

The Big Creek Hydro Project is located 60 miles north of Fresno, California at the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It currently has 6 major reservoirs, 27 dams, and 9 powerhouses. Big Creek was America's first large-scale integrated hydroelectric project that began in 1912. In 1949 the project was expanded raising generation capacity from 300 to over 1000 MW.

In September 2020, a wildfire burned more than 375,000 acres causing extensive damage to other transmission and distribution lines in the area. In another section of the Big Creek Transmission Corridor where ACCC Conductor continues to be installed, the ACCC Conductor was charred by flames, but remained otherwise undamaged. SCE crews were able to use ACCC Conductor in their active inventory to replace other conductor damaged by the fire. CTC Global will provide further updates about this ongoing project in the coming months.
ACCC® Conductor being used to Improve Grid Efficiency and Combat Climate Change

Did you know that electric power generation is one the single largest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions responsible for climate change and that, worldwide, nearly one billion metric tons of CO2 are attributed to the inefficient delivery of electricity through the electric superhighway wires that deliver power to our homes, businesses, and industries?

What you probably didn’t know is that CTC Global’s high-performance, energy-efficient ACCC® Conductor has already begun improving the efficiency of the electric transmission and distribution superhighway in more than 60 countries around the world by reducing electrical line losses by 30% or more.

So far, these line loss reductions are saving the energy and emission equivalents of building 800 one-megawatt wind turbines, and also helping connect more people with cleaner sources of affordable and reliable electricity to help improve the quality of life while helping combat climate change. CTC Global is proud that its ACCC® Conductor is serving such an important role.

ACCC® ULS Conductor Offers Added Strength and Reduced Sag

First deployed on a 1.4 kilometer lake crossing in Africa in 2013, The ACCC® ULS Conductor offers greater strength, a lower coefficient of thermal expansion and higher modulus of elasticity than the standard ACCC Conductor core. The ULS version has a higher carbon fiber content raising the tensile strength from 310 to 375 ksi (Compare this to 285 ksi high-strength steel). While the added strength and lighter weight can enable longer spans, the higher modulus and increased stiffness reduce sag and blow out during high wind conditions. Improved stiffness can also reduce sag under heavy ice load conditions.

The higher carbon fiber content also reduces the coefficient of thermal expansion from 1.6 x 10-6 /°C to 0.75 x 10-6 /°C. While dozens of engineers have specified ACCC ULS Conductor for projects, worldwide, the ULS version of the ACCC Conductor has served our clients well. The ACCC ULS Conductor is available in many sizes and offers transmission engineers added design flexibility.

The ACCC ULS Conductor can be ordered with Type 1350-O fully annealed aluminum or as an AZR version with Aluminum-Zirconium thermal resistant alloy for even higher overall conductor strength.
ACCC AZR Conductor – Expanding the Capabilities of the ACCC® Conductor Using Aluminum Zirconium Alloy

ACCC® AZR Conductor uses either the standard 310 ksi core or the higher strength 375 ksi core that is then wrapped with one or more layers of a high strength, thermal resistant aluminum-zirconium alloy. While conventional ACCC Conductors typically use fully annealed aluminum to maximize conductivity, the ACCC AZR Conductor offers nearly the same efficiency, but far greater overall strength. The added strength and increased tensile modulus mitigates conductor sag under heavy wind or ice loads, or very long spans. To learn more visit www.ctcglobal.com
Did You Know:

The ACCC® Conductor Core is the only carbon fiber conductor core in the world that meets the internationally recognized ASTM B-987 Standard, "Standard Specification for Carbon Fiber Thermoset Polymer Matrix Composite Core (CFC) for use in Overhead Electrical Conductors."

ASTM B-987 / B-987M - 20 can be found on ASTM's website at https://www.astm.org/Standards/B987.htm
ACCC Conductor is currently reducing CO2 emissions by over 2.6 million metric tons every year - the equivalent of removing over 600,000 cars from the road
CTC Global's Free Conductor Comparison Program CCP™ Software is Available Online
