How to Improve the Efficiency, Capacity, Reliability and Resilience
of the Electric Power Grid with ACCC® Conductor
CTC Global
ACCC® News - October 2020
Quick Update:

There are currently 57 active ACCC® Conductor installations underway and 97 additional ACCC Conductor installations scheduled to start by January, 2021, in addition to more than 800 already completed. Why? Because the ACCC Conductor offers the ability to improve the efficiency, capacity, reliability and resilience of the electric power grid, worldwide, while saving time, money and the environment.

CTC Global Co-Sponsors California Energy Summit

CTC Global participated in two panel sessions during the October 28 - 30 California Energy Summit hosted by Infocast. David Townley, Director of Public Policy, participated as a panelist on the topic of “Translating the IRP into Procurement.” The view he brought to the panel discussion was how the GRID can free-up generation capacity by reducing line losses using modern conductors such as the ACCC® Conductor.

Mr. Townley noted that a 30% decrease in T&D system losses would eliminate the need for 1.13 GW of renewable energy capacity and reduce “wasted electricity” by 3.95 GWh per year, that would reduce CO2 emission by nearly one million metric tons per year in California.

Mr. Townley also moderated “Expansion of EIM Capabilities and the Role of Import Resource Adequacy in Meeting CA Energy.” Resource Adequacy (RA) means having enough electricity supply (or demand interruption) to meet the electricity demand. Of course, increasing the efficiency of the GRID, reduces the amount of electricity resources that are needed at any point in time (more of the electricity generated gets delivered to the end-user, as less is lost on the way).

The CTC Global Team also hosted a virtual booth where participants could view a number of CTC Global videos, download information and speak to one of our technical representatives.

If you missed this event we hope to see you at the next one.
NPT/PTC1 Completes ACCC® Reconductor Project in Vietnam

With the support of Vietnam Technique Development Company (VTD), NPT/PTC1 completed their Ha Tinh to Formosa 220 kV transmission line upgrade between structures 31A and 35 in central Vietnam.

NPT selected 367.4 mm2 Amsterdam size ACCC® Conductor to replace existing ACSR 300/39 conductor. The longest span on the project was 439 meters. Existing steel lattice structures were used. CADIVI manufactured the ACCC Conductor for this project and hardware was provided by PLP. The line was tested using the ACCC InfoCore System and energized within hours of its completion.
COPEL to Begin Reconductoring 230 kV Double Circuit Londrina to Ibiporã Transmission Line

The energy company of Paraná`s state, COPEL, which owns 28 generation plants, 5,000 MW of installed capacity, 2,794 km of lines and 38 high voltage substations, will begin reconductoring their 230 kV Londrina to Ibipora transmission line in mid November.

The objective of this project is to allow an increase in capacity in the next decade in the northern region of the state of Paraná in Brazil. The 20.3 km double circuit transmission line is being upgraded with Cordoba size ACCC® Conductor to replace existing Drake size ACSR conductor, which will increase line capacity from 570 amps to 879 amps.

The use of high-capacity, low-sag ACCC® Conductor allowed the use of the existing structures, which reduces project cost, environmental impact, permitting challenges, overall project timeframe and the need to acquire new land. CTC Global's Master Installer, Mr. Edirlei Zacharias, will be on site to support the installation.

How Utilities Are Leveraging ACCC® Conductor Technology to Achieve Their Emission Reduction Initiatives

Initially deployed to increase the capacity and reduce thermal sag on highly congested transmission lines, the ACCC® Conductor is also being widely deployed to help meet emission reduction initiatives. The ACCC Conductor’s lightweight composite core enables the use of nearly 30% more conductive aluminum which reduces electrical resistance and line losses by 25 to 40% or more. Reduced line losses serve to reduce fuel consumption and associated emissions.

In many parts of the world, financial institutions such as Asian Development, World Bank and others are funding transmission projects where the ACCC Conductor is being deployed – not only to help deliver more power to support economic development – but also to leverage the line loss reductions and efficiency aspects of the ACCC Conductor, which are helping them achieve their emission reduction mandates.

In the coming weeks we will be sharing some very impressive examples that demonstrate how this is working both in and outside of the United States. Please stay tuned and thanks for following CTC Global.
ACCC AZR Conductor – Expanding the capabilities of the ACCC® Conductor using aluminum zirconium alloy

ACCC® AZR Conductor uses either the standard 310 ksi core or the higher strength 375 ksi core that is then wrapped with one or more layers of a high strength, thermal resistant aluminum-zirconium alloy. While conventional ACCC Conductors typically use fully annealed aluminum to maximize conductivity, the ACCC AZR Conductor offers nearly the same efficiency, but far greater overall strength. The added strength and increased tensile modulus mitigates conductor sag under heavy wind or ice loads, or very long spans. To learn more visit www.ctcglobal.com
Did You Know:

The ACCC® Conductor Core is the only carbon fiber conductor core in the world that meets the internationally recognized ASTM B-987 Standard, "Standard Specification for Carbon Fiber Thermoset Polymer Matrix Composite Core (CFC) for use in Overhead Electrical Conductors."

ASTM B-987 / B-987M - 20 can be found on ASTM's website at https://www.astm.org/Standards/B987.htm
ACCC Conductor is currently reducing CO2 emissions by over 2.6 million metric tons every year - the equivalent of removing over 600,000 cars from the road
CTC Global's Free Conductor Comparison Program CCP™ Software is Available Online

CTC Global is pleased to announce that our highly regarded Conductor Comparison Program (CCP™) software is now available online. The new web-based version has all the features found in the Excel version, which has been replaced and will no longer be supported. The new version is designed to make it easier to use, and it also has some new features. Having CCP online will make it easier to keep it up-to-date with new wire files and other data, and to add improvements as they are made. Users will always know they have the current version every time they log in. CCP is also compatible with tablets.

Registration to use CCP requires only a valid email address and password. Users may also use CCP as a guest however, saving and export features are only available to registered users.

Thank you for using our CCP. We welcome your feedback. For technical support, please contact [email protected]
