Speed to Power: Key Takeaways from NARUC’s Winter Policy Summit
At this year’s NARUC Winter Policy Summit in Washington, D.C., the industry’s top minds gathered to tackle a pressing question: How can we deliver power to growing loads faster than traditional transmission planning allows? With over 2,200 attendees, discussions centered on accelerating grid expansion, enhancing reliability, and leveraging technology to meet surging electricity demand. Chris Womack of Southern Company captured the urgency best, stating, “When I think about energy dominance, I think about energy abundance.” Meanwhile, Melody Birmingham of NiSource emphasized the challenge of applying traditional approaches to a rapidly evolving problem, reinforcing the industry-wide call for faster, more efficient solutions.
A major theme of the summit was the role of advanced transmission technology in overcoming lengthy planning and permitting roadblocks. Chuck Marshall of ITC Holdings Corp. highlighted composite core conductors as a breakthrough solution for doubling transmission capacity in existing rights-of-way, significantly reducing the need for new infrastructure. Maria Pope of Portland General Electric further emphasized the growing focus on grid resilience and wildfire mitigation, warning that without standardized wildfire response plans, utilities will face continued economic hardship. The industry’s consensus? Speed is critical, and new solutions are needed now.
Throughout the summit, CTC Global’s team—including Theodore Paradise, Anne McDowell, Alfie Wilkes, Peter Brehm, David Townley, and Jaunice Terrel - engaged in key discussions on how CTC Global’s ACCC® technology is delivering “Speed to Power”, allowing utilities to increase capacity, lower costs, and mitigate wildfire risks - all in a fraction of the time required for traditional upgrades.
