Phase One of Transmission Line Upgrade Completed in Russia

With the support of EPC firm Meridian, LTD., and contractor Sibir' Electrosetstroy Mechanical Division #54, ОАО Tyumenenergo, one of Russia's largest interregional distribution grid companies, completed the installation of 619 kcmil (313.8 mm^2) Oslo size ACCC conductor to increase the capacity of an existing 110 kV transmission line near Tyumen City in the Tyumen Region of West Siberia.  Founded in 1979, ОАО Tyumenenergo supplies more than 3.5 million people within its 1.4 million square kilometer service area via more than 38,000 kilometers of transmission lines.

EPC firm, Meridian, Ltd, based in Sain Petersburg, designed the line using ACCC Oslo size conductor due to its high electrical capacity and resistance to extreme climatic conditions. While the area is highly susceptible to extreme wind and heavy ice load conditions, temperatures in the region also vary from -50C to +40C. The ACCC Oslo offered an optimal solution for the reconductor project due to its proven ability to withstand such extreme conditions.

The ACCC conductor was manufactured and delivered by SimRoss-Lamifil, LLC., who also provided training and field support as they had successfully completed two previous installations in Russia. The second phase of the Tyumenskaya-Ozhongino project is slated to begin next month. The next phase of the project will employ 832 kcmil (421.4 mm^2) Brussels size ACCC conductor.

CTC Global & Burndy Support Lineman Training at the
Northwest Lineman College in Idaho

Earlier this month CTC Global's Chip White and Hank Maxwell from Burndy assisted Gil Maiuro of the Northwest Lineman College to demonstrate correct hardware installation and handling procedures for the ACCC conductor on a 230 kV transmission to substation training facility in Meridian, Idaho. CTC has supported the Northwest Lineman College for years, as the College was built on the concept of delivering the benchmark standard of training and contributing improvements in the industry.  For more information please visit http://www.lineman.edu/

New 'ULS' ACCC Conductor Developed for Heavy Ice & Long Span Applications

To combat extreme ice load events and very long spans, CTC Global recently introduced a number of new conductor designs that use a higher strength, higher modulus composite core.  These new conductor designs are known as ACCC ULS.  The tensile strength of the ULS core is 375 ksi which  is greater than the normal ACCC conductor's 315 ksi, both of which are greater than high strength 285 ksi steel.  The composite cores are also about 70 percent lighter than steel which further reduces conductor sag and stress on the supporting structures.

Why Over 100 International Utilities Have Selected ACCC

  • High Capacity
  • Low Sag
  • High Strength
  • Fatigue Resistant
  • Corrosion Resistant
  • Excellent Self Damping
  • Easy to Install
  • Great for Long Spans
  • Very Tough
  • Extensively Proven
  • Excellent for N-1 Conditions
  • Lower Line Losses

The ACCC Conductor's added aluminum content (without a weight or diameter penalty) allows it to run cooler under any load condition which translates into reduced line losses. Reduced line losses can save fuel, emissions and generation capacity.

The Bottom Line:

In more than 300 cases, the ACCC conductor has offered over 100 utilities the best economic solution for their particular project.

Free Design Software

CTC Global created CCP to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized. The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes. The program is fully functional and uses standard industry formulas (such as IEEE 738-2006). Outputs are readily comparable to Sag10, PLS CADD™ and other similar programs.
