IMFA & OPTCL Complete ACCC Installation in India

IMFA (Indian Metals & Ferro Alloys) & OPTCL (Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited) recently completed a 132kV line upgrade using ACCC Casablanca conductor to replace ACSR Panther size conductor. The project was completed in Bhubaneswar, also known as the "City of Temples," in the Indian state of Orissa, with the help of the installation contractor M/s SC Dhal. The ACCC conductor was provided by CTC Global's manufacturing partner Apar Industries Limited.

Due to weather constraints and high electrical demand conditions outages were provided sporadically which hindered the installation pace to some degree, but provided many new crew members with more time to gain additional skills. The 540 kcmil (273.6 mm^2) ACCC Casablanca was chosen over other HTLS conductors due to its high strength, light weight, high capacity, low electrical resistance and low thermal sag. These features are allowing the new line to carry approximately twice the current of the previously installed ACSR conductor without the need to modify existing structures.

Considering Bhubaneswar's high degree of susceptibility to high winds, cyclones and monsoons due to its low elevation (~45 meters above sea level) and its proximity to the eastern coastal plains, the ACCC conductor should also help improve the line's reliability and help keep IMFA's operations in full swing no matter what challenges the weather might pose.

IMFA is India's largest, fully integrated producer of Ferro alloys with 187 MVA installed furnace capacity backed up by 258 MW captive power generation and extensive chrome ore mining tracts. IMFA is globally known as a reliable and cost-competitive producer with a particular focus on customer satisfaction. In addition to supporting Indian manufacturers, IMFA also serves customers in South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. Though IMFA is a pioneer in silicon alloys and Ferro chrome used to mitigate corrosion in stainless steel, they selected the composite core ACCC conductor for this particular application due to its numerous advantages compared to other conductor types and the fact that ACCC offered the lowest overall project cost.

The project was completed in association with the Odisha Power Transmission Corporation Limited (OPTCL) who is one of the largest transmission utilities in India. OPTCL owns and operates nearly 12,000 circuit kilometers of 400kV, 220kV and 132kV transmission lines supported by 109 substations with a capacity of well over 13,000 MVA.

New 'ULS' ACCC Conductor Developed for Heavy Ice & Long Span Applications

To combat extreme ice load events and very long spans, CTC Global recently introduced a number of new conductor designs that use a higher strength, higher modulus composite core.  These new conductor designs are known as ACCC ULS.  The tensile strength of the ULS core is 375 ksi which  is greater than the normal ACCC conductor's 315 ksi, both of which are greater than high strength 285 ksi steel.  The composite cores are also about 70 percent lighter than steel which further reduces conductor sag and stress on the supporting structures.

Why Over 100 International Utilities Have Selected ACCC

  • High Capacity
  • Low Sag
  • High Strength
  • Fatigue Resistant
  • Corrosion Resistant
  • Excellent Self Damping
  • Easy to Install
  • Great for Long Spans
  • Very Tough
  • Extensively Proven
  • Excellent for N-1 Conditions
  • Lower Line Losses

The ACCC Conductor's added aluminum content (without a weight or diameter penalty) allows it to run cooler under any load condition which translates into reduced line losses. Reduced line losses can save fuel, emissions and generation capacity.

The Bottom Line:

In more than 290 cases, the ACCC conductor has offered over 100 utilities the best economic solution for their particular project.

Free Design Software

CTC Global created CCP to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized. The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes. The program is fully functional and uses standard industry formulas (such as IEEE 738-2006). Outputs are readily comparable to Sag10, PLS CADD™ and other similar programs.
