CTC Global Participates at Minnesota Grid Policy Summit 

On July 30th, CTC Global participated in a "groundbreaking" Electric Utility Infrastructure (EUI) efficiency policy initiative by the state energy office in Minnesota.  This initiative builds on Minnesota legislation that electric utilities in the state spend an amount equal to 1.5% of their electric sales for "conservation" projects. 

This effort by the state energy office in the Department of Commerce, looked at transmission and distribution (T&D) efficiency upgrades as well as generation plant efficiency improvement.  In a "bottoms-up" approach to identifying T&D opportunities, GDS Associates, Inc., the project consultants, identified 3 main areas of potential: low-loss conductors; high-efficiency transformers, and conservation voltage reduction. 

GDS identified that low-loss conductors, such as CTC Global's ACCC conductor, could provide 641,319 MWH per year, or almost one-half, of the achievable energy savings from the T&D sector during the 20 year period of the study. 

David Townley, Director of Public Affairs for CTC Global, also presented to the stakeholders what high performance conductors were, why ACCC is highly energy efficient, how high efficiency conductors could be applied to gain the energy savings available in the T&D grid, and some suggestions for policy guidance to utilities.

Three examples were provided showing how reconductoring with ACCC had been used in existing right-of-ways, on existing structures, to secure needed capacity as well as line-loss reductions for those projects. The line loss reductions provided energy savings, reductions in air emissions, including CO2 reduction, water use reduction, and freed-up generating capacity. CEZ Romania Completes 1st ACCC Conductor Installation in Romania
Earlier this month, with the support of EPC firm Prelchim, CEZ Romania completed the first ACCC conductor installation in Craiova, Romania. CEZ Romania is a distribution company, established in 2005, after acquiring the assets of Electrica Oltenia SA. CEZ Romania selected 248.8 mm^2 (491 kcmil) Gdankz size ACCC conductor to increase the capacity of their hydro-based 100 kV Craiova  - DIF transmission line,
The ACCC conductor was provided by Lamifil and hardware for the project was provided by Preformed Line Products. CTC Global's Master Installer, Bill Percy, provided training and installation support.
Andrea Michele Sacripanti, Vice President for CTC Global stated: "We are very proud of this important achievement in Romania and will continue to support CEZ as they strive to increase line capacity, reduce line losses and develop a more efficient and robust transmission grid in their region."
Craiova is situated near the east bank of the Jiu River in south west Romania. Craiova is a longstanding political center, and is located at approximately equal distance from the Southern Carpathians (to the north) and the River Danube (to the south).

American Electric Power Completes Storm Hardening / Upgrade Project using ACCC Conductor in Corpus Christi, Texas
Last month American Electric Power completed the latest of several ACCC installations in Corpus Christi, Texas. The 138 kV single phase, single circuit reconductor project was successfully installed and energized using ACCC Lapwing conductor manufactured by General Cable.

North Houston Pole Line of Quanta Services supported the AEP project. David Pearce, one of CTC Global's Master Installers supported the crews. This particularly challenging installation was completed in just under nine months. In an effort to improve storm resilience, AEP installed new dead-end structures and reinforced bracing on existing tangent structures. 
The existing ROW included two major roadways, two underbuilt distribution lines, an underbuilt high voltage transmission line, and close proximity to an international airport.
The field tested and proven resiliency of the ACCC conductor has led to the substantial deployment in storm ridden areas like this all over the world. This project marks AEP's 16th ACCC conductor deployment since 2006.
