Resilience Matters:
ACCC Conductor Withstands Another Direct Hit

Earlier this month a Drake size ACCC conductor installed by NV Energy nine years ago on a 120 kV line near Reno, Nevada survived a windstorm that snapped a wood H-Frame structure dropping the upper assembly and ACCC conductor to the ground. The next day the structure was replaced and the ACCC conductor was quickly put back into service without the need to repair or replace it.
This is not the first time Mother Nature and NV Energy have put the ACCC conductor to the test. In 2010 on another ACCC project, a smaller size Linnet size ACCC conductor was undamaged after withstanding 100 mph+ winds that uprooted poles. In 2012 sections of the same line were burned down due to a brush fire. The H-Frames were replaced and the undamaged ACCC conductor was lifted back into place.
The takeaway here is that things do happen, but the ability to quickly restore power after an event is extremely important.
These are just a few examples of how the use of ACCC conductor can improve not only the efficiency, capacity and reliability of the grid, it can also serve to improve grid resilience.

SA Power Networks Completes First ACCC® Conductor Installation in Australia

Over the last few weeks, SA Power Networks completed the first ACCC conductor installation in Australia in Adelaide. Adelaide is the capital city of the state of South Australia, and the fifth-most populous city of Australia, home to more than 75 percent of the South Australian population.

With the support of Ten Group Australia, and CTC Global's Master Installer, Bill Percy, SAPN installed 623 kcmil (315.5 mm^2) Lisbon size ACCC conductor on their Morphette Vale East to Onkapringa 66 kV line. This was a reconductor project.

Powercom grips, Hubbell pulling socks, Berland reel stands and Tesmec tensioners were used with no issues. Taihan provided the ACCC conductor.

Bill Percy was very impressed with SAPN's crew, supervisors and equipment and looks forward to returning in the near future to support additional projects.

ACCC® Conductor Receives 3rd Party Certification for Energy Efficiency and CO2 Emission Reduction Credits 

CTC Global ACCC conductor is the first electric transmission conductor in history to earn SCS certification for CO2 emission reductions resulting from improved energy efficiency. 
SCS Global Services (SCS) verified that ACCC conductor reduces CO2 emissions associated with transmission line losses by 27 to 31 percent under certain design conditions compared to conventional steel reinforced ACSR conductors, the 100-year old technology currently used in most electric transmission and distribution power lines.

CTC Global created CCP software to help system planners and engineers compare the ampacity, line losses, thermal and ice load sag, and economic aspects of nearly any conductor type and size, so the numerous advantages of the ACCC conductor can be fully realized.
The user simply selects the conductor types and sizes from drop down menus and enters the appropriate values & assumptions highlighted in the yellow boxes. The program is fully functional and uses standard industry formulas (such as IEEE 738-2006). Outputs are readily comparable to Sag10®, PLS CADD™ and other similar programs.
