Update Your County Legislative Coordinator

It is time for counties to update their County Legislative Coordinator (CLC). The CLC’s primary responsibilities are to relay pertinent information about current legislation to county commissioners and county management and to maintain an open line of communication with ACCG to ensure county-specific information is readily available for legislators. ACCG encourages all counties to participate in this network and designate a CLC prior to the legislative session. To confirm, update, or appoint your county’s CLC, please contact Avis White at awhite@accg.org or 404-522-5022.

Immigration Reports Due by Dec. 31

Since 2011, counties have been required to submit an annual immigration report to the Department of Audits and Accounts (DOAA). New legislation passed during the 2024 legislative session, HB 1105, enacting several new requirements for entities (state and local) with law enforcement personnel and entities that operate jails or detention centers. These new requirements are in addition to the reporting requirements that currently exist. The DOAA has made several changes to their reporting system to incorporate these new changes. Additionally, the style of the reporting system has changed and changes have been made to other sections, namely the sanctuary policy section, that may change who submits that section of the report for your county. Finally, DOAA is now required to provide random reviews of immigration reports. Any county staff who is charged with submitting parts of the immigration report needs to be aware of these changes.

The reporting portal opened on Nov. 1. All reports are due by Dec. 31. DOAA has provided several resources on their website regarding the new immigration compliance and reporting requirements as well as submission guidance.

Local Governments’ Wildfire Response Pilot Program

The Department of the Interior announced that over $20 million is available through Pres. Biden’s Investing in America agenda to strengthen local governments’ wildfire response by converting vehicles to wildland fire engines. This pilot program is helping small, remote emergency response agencies quickly expand their wildfire response capacity as they continue to face the devastating impacts of climate change, drought and intensifying wildfires. Funding can be used by local governments that provide emergency services to areas with a population of 50,000 or less to purchase slip-on tanker units, which allow them to quickly convert trucks and other vehicles to be operated as wildland fire engines.

Grant amounts will range from $10,000 to $500,000. Applications must be submitted through grants.gov by Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2025.
