Time is Running Out for an Accurate 2020 Census Count
|
The deadline for the 2020 Census is September 30. As of September 16, Georgia ranked #46 in total census response rates (self-response + door-to-door collections). There are less than two weeks left to maximize collections to ensure your community receives its fair share of federal funding and has reliable data to use for redistricting, planning, and service delivery. The 2020 Census only takes 10 minutes to complete and will have an impact on your community for 10 years.
In observance of Constitution Day, the Census Bureau is launching a week-long social media campaign urging communities to complete the 2020 Census. From September 17-September 20, share this 2020 Census graphic on social media using the hashtag #2020Census and post this 2020 Census banner on your website. More outreach resources provided by the Census Bureau can be found here.

What Your Community Can Do to Boost Response Rates
Need some tips on how to engage your community and encourage census participation? Use the following suggestions to help ramp up your outreach efforts.
- Work with your local media (newspapers and radio stations) to get the word out that we still need census participation.
- Check in with your county and city employees to make sure they have an opportunity to participate.
-
Use all tools at your disposal to notify members of the community to complete the census.
- If communities where you live/serve have an email, text, or robo-call service where they typically notify residents of office closures, water main breaks, road closures, etc., ask that they use that to contact residents in the community.
-
Encourage participation on social media - it’s easy. Use videos and PSAs provided by the Census Bureau, Georgia Voices and the State Complete Count Committee.
- Use high school football, softball, soccer, lacrosse games to advertise the census and make announcements during games about how to participate.
- Ask your city council/county commission/school board to each announce this during their regularly scheduled meetings for the rest of the month.
- Notify all civic organizations/distribution lists available to you to implore participation by their membership.
- Ask all houses of worship to notify parishioners that we have until September 30 to complete the census. Places of worship should be trusted voices to their congregations.
- Ask that census messaging be included on all community/organization/agency websites.
- Ask all businesses, churches, and government buildings in your community to use their marquees or signs to publicize the census.
- Send out email blasts to everyone within your network and ask them to do the same.
-
Schedule MQAs with the Census Bureau. Details are available here.
- Cross promote the census at any existing event hosted by your community (PPE giveaways, food distributions, blood drives, etc.).
