In response to the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, on March 26, discussions about our country’s Infrastructure needs have been in the headlines for weeks. I am sure many of our members have had multiple conversations with their non-engineer friends and families about this event, as the general public always turns to Civil Engineers to answer questions and reassure the public when a tragedy like this occurs.

Florida MATHCOUNTS® State Competition Winners

Middle school students from across Florida competed at the Florida MATHCOUNTS state competition on March 29, 2024, in Orlando. We had 55 volunteers, with 52 schools competing and 232 Mathletes!

 

Congratulations to these students who are moving on to the National MATHCOUNTS Competition in Washington, DC, in May:

Rick Acree, PE, Named 2024 Larry Madrid GMEC Award Recipient

Congratulations to Rick Acree, PE, as the 2024 Larry Madrid GMEC Award recipient at the GMEC Conference earlier this month! This award goes to a professional engineer who, by virtue of their service, had a significant, positive impact on the geotechnical and materials engineering profession.


Rick has 28 years of experience as a geotechnical engineer in Florida. His expertise includes geotechnical consulting for roadway construction and widening for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), municipalities and counties.


He was the 2021-2022 Director of the Geotechnical and Materials Engineering Council and the current ACEC Florida Vice President. 

FDOTConnect Virtual Training Lab: Advanced Roadway Template Design

This is a 1- day training course to learn the fundamentals of Template Design. Participants will learn basic and advanced knowledge of the Create Template dialog within Bentley OpenRoads Designer Connect Edition environment for design and modeling within the FDOTConnect workspace.

 

This training lab will utilize the 2024 Course Guide and Dataset.

Benedico Joins Lochner as Southeast Regional Manager


H.W. Lochner, Inc. (Lochner), a leading provider of infrastructure planning and engineering services, is pleased to announce that Nick Benedico, PE, has joined Lochner as Vice President, Southeast Regional Manager, reporting to the company’s Chief Executive Officer Terry Ruhl. 


Lochner’s Southeast Region is centered in Florida, with offices in Fort Meyers, Jacksonville, Miami, Tallahassee, and Tampa. Benedico will provide leadership for the firm’s surface transportation business serving state agencies, counties, and municipalities across Florida. He succeeds Don Skelton, PE, who is retiring after 11 successful years at Lochner and a 37-year career supporting the delivery of large transportation projects and programs. 

Cranford Joins KEITH as Principal Engineer


Kelly Cranford, PE, ENV SP, has proudly joined KEITH as Principal Engineer. With over 33 years of experience, Kelly will be instrumental in expanding the KEITH Water practice alongside the firm’s existing talented staff. She brings a robust stormwater portfolio that expands throughout Palm Beach, Martin and St. Lucie Counties.


Kelly's municipal experience includes project development, scheduling, and implementation of projects under a $40 million bond and City of West Palm Beach’s 5-year CIP program projects; supervising SFWMD teams responsible for review, recommendation of approval, and enforcement of Environmental Resource and Consumptive Use permits, and supervising West Palm Beach construction coordinator teams.

Fauri Selected as RS&H's Construction Management Operations Leader


RS&H’s Construction Management National Operations Leader, Doug Geiger, PE, announced he is retiring in October 2024. After a thorough search spanning several months, RS&H has selected Kirk Fauri, PE, as the new Construction Management National Operations Leader.  


Kirk recently transitioned to his new role. He and RS&H remain committed to delivering the level of service you have come to expect.  

Terracon Promotes James Nesbitt, P.E. to Office Manager in Tampa


Terracon Consultants, Inc. is pleased to announce the promotion of James Nesbitt, P.E. to Office Manager in Tampa. Nesbitt, who has 20 years of experience as a geotechnical engineer, will oversee the operations and growth of the Tampa office, serving clients in the public and private sectors.


Since joining Terracon, he has shown tremendous leadership growth while fostering a positive work environment. Nesbitt has embodied Terracon’s commitment to technical quality and client experience, where he has been instrumental in developing and maintaining strong relationships with clients, delivering solutions that meet their needs and expectations in the Tampa Bay region.

Noordzy Celebrates 10 years at Hanson


Jonathan Noordzy, P.E., QCxP, CxA, EMP, the commissioning and energy technical discipline chief at Hanson Professional Services Inc., recently celebrated 10 years of service at the firm.


Noordzy, who joined Hanson in 2014 and works at the Orlando, Florida, regional office, oversees Hanson’s building commissioning and energy technical discipline and provides commissioning services, energy analysis and the planning of energy systems, as well as mechanical system peer and design reviews. He has worked on projects including Orlando International Airport’s new Terminal C, over 20 Orange County Public Schools facilities, the University of Florida’s new Malachowsky Hall for Data Science and Information Technology and Florida Power & Light Co.’s new office and data center in Palm Beach Gardens.
