As we near the end of the year, I wanted to take a minute to share with our members all the exciting things we have planned for 2024. Our Staff works tirelessly to coordinate events around the State for our member firms, and we are starting off the year with a number of exciting events!

On January 9-10, 2024, we will have our 2024 Professional Engineers Legislative Days in Tallahassee. For those who have not attended this before, it is a once-a-year event held during the legislative session that allows our members to interact with politicians in their Region to discuss issues affecting our profession.

The GMEC Committee is looking for presentations for the 2024 Geotechnical and Material Engineers Conference held April 3-5, 2024, at the Marriott Jacksonville Downtown. We are seeking presentations related to advancements within the Geotechnical and Materials Engineering Industry, such as new and exciting modeling technologies, cutting-edge materials, or a new business model.

The 2023 MATHCOUNTS® program year was a huge success! Fifty-six schools with over 200 Mathletes competed in the Florida MATHCOUNTS State Competition in Orlando this past spring, and the Florida Team earned 2nd place at the National Competition!

ACEC's R&D Advocacy Goes National

ACEC has launched a campaign to fix the 5-year R&D amortization mandate, introducing a new advocacy campaign to enable members to contact their representatives in Washington and share their stories on why this misguided and short-sighted policy must be repealed.  


The cornerstone of this effort is a new television ad that will run on the national news and then concentrate among decision-makers in Washington, DC., making the case that R&D amortization is a punitive policy imposing an onerous burden on the innovators who drive our nation’s economy forward.

Highlights from the Fall 2023 Conference

The ACEC Fall 2023 Conference kicked off with remarks by U.S. Chamber Executive Vice President and Chief Policy Officer Neil Bradley, who shared his impressions on the current political state of play, and what he sees as warning signs for the future of free enterprise.


Emerging technologies were a hot topic, with over a dozen tech-centric breakout sessions, and the General Session concluded with the Awards Ceremony.

Hampton Celebrates 10 Years at Hanson’s Jacksonville Office


Dustin Hampton, P.E., CFM, associate project manager, recently celebrated 10 years at Hanson Professional Services Inc.


Hampton joined the firm in 2013 and works at the Jacksonville office. He provides land development design, analyzes stormwater structures and conveyance and performs utility design and analysis. He has provided services for projects including the new Fire Station 63 and the creation of Fort Family Regional Park at Baymeadows, both in Jacksonville; the new competition pool and aquatic center at the University of North Florida; and an express lanes study for a portion of Interstate 10 and multiple stormwater improvements for the Florida Department of Transportation’s District 2.

Kwan Joins Hanson’s Orlando Regional Office


Kalvin Kwan, P.E., CEM, energy, sustainability and resiliency lead, recently joined Hanson Professional Services Inc.’s Orlando regional office. He will oversee the long-term planning and development of projects involving energy demand, decarbonization and strategic energy conservation initiatives.


Kwan was previously an account executive for a renewable energy firm in Orlando. He is also an adjunct professor for Valencia College’s energy management and controls technology program.
