Holiday Date Improvement
easter-egg-nest.jpg
Improvements are always happening in your software!

With the latest build of Student Manager, there is an improvement to Holiday Dates. Holiday Dates can now be time specific.

Federal holidays are in the system and you are able to add your own holidays. Now you can make a  holiday begin at a specific time.

For example, you close at 5 p.m. the Friday before Easter Weekend. Before now,  you'd have to put that you were closed Sat/Sun and manually adjust courses for that Friday. Now you can have the holiday begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and continue through Sunday. If any class is scheduled, the system will notify you that there is a holiday in effect. T his is very handy when using Room Use in coordination with holidays -  especially for those who have night classes or location-specific holidays.

This enhancement, requested by Western Suffolk BOCES, is available to everyone in version 8.0.074. Proof that when customers make a request, we pay attention.

InCommon Shibboleth SSO Module - Now Available from ACEware
Last month, Stein shared a preview of a new  single sign-on (SSO)  module for ACEweb - InCommon Shibboleth. If your institution is a member of the InCommon Federation, which uses the open-source Shibboleth package to manage your campus SSO, you now have the option of integrating ACEweb with that SSO service.

This means faculty and staff who register for  your programs  are able to use their campus credentials to log into ACEweb. They have one less username and password to remember. That's something to appreciate in this world of being required to remember a myriad of usernames and passwords!

This new module, priced at $3,750, is available to those who have Shibboleth through the InCommon Federation. If interested, drop me a line

Tip of the Month: Trim It!
I get calls from customers when character fields appear askew in reports. You need your reports to be very professional and this month the tip is regarding the TRIM function.

TRIM removes extra spaces from the end of a character expression. This allows you to get to the meat of what you are trying to display on the report without having all that extra space before or after the character string (i.e. TRIM(cocrsenm) will returns only the course name without any of the trailing spaces in that field).

You will sometimes run into this with JUSTDOIT functions when you are trying to concatenate several long fields together like cocrsenm that may have trailing spaces at the end of the character string (typically you'll get an error saying that the string is too long). This is happening is because the size of the JUSTDOIT takes the field into consideration as well, and you are limited to a string of 255 characters. Adding TRIM to the field you are trying to pull in will remove those spaces and allow you more room in your JUSTDOIT.

In addition to the TRIM function, we also have similar functions that will trim spaces off the right, left, or both sides of a field: RTRIM, LTRIM, and ALLTRIM, respectively.  See our Online Help for more information on TRIM and related functions.

Report of the Month: StampUnl
We have a bunch of "Stamp" functions (eleven by my count, not counting the new StampUnl) to put data into some field in another area from a report. One extremely useful example is to mark the certificate date field on the registration on the day you run certificates (actually, that function is SwapVal, so not a "Stamp" in this case). You can also stamp information into Credential, Instructor, Registration UDFs, and more. With the invention of Unlimited UDFs last summer, we realized we needed one more.

Introducing StampUnl. This allows you to s tamp a value in a specified Unlimited user-defined field in the specified UUDF table. Here is the write-up on it:
Reporting Area(s):
Course, Register, Names
Required Parameters:
  1. "N", "C", or "R" to specify which UUDF table to stamp to (Names, Course or Register)
  2. key field to specify a name, course, registration etc (nmid, cucrse, rucrse+rgid)
  3. Unlimited UDF field to stamp into
  4. Value to be stamped
Optional Parameters:
None
Example(s):
stampunl("R",rgcrse+rgid,"dance_partner","Shoe Rental")
Stamps "Shoe Rental" into the dance_partner UUDF for all registrants on the report
stampunl("N",nmid,"meal_preference","Vegetarian")
Stamps "Vegetarian" into the meal_preference UUDF for all names on the report

Here is the justafter example from the update webinar earlier this month:
justafter([select *,stampunl("N",nmid,"terminal","C11") as blah from (cursor5) into cursor (cursor5)])

I'm sure you'll agree that this brings even more power to your Unlimited UDFs. Please make sure you make a backup before doing a "Stamp" function as with any other mass tool. Contact your technician if you need any help. Happy stamping!
