At ACHP we realize we're all in this together. Here are some best practices and ideas that  may be helpful as you communicate with your customers, followers, and community.

  • Keep your customers informed. Make sure they're aware of any changes in your day-to-day handyman operations or modified business hours.
  • Positive thinking produces exceptional outcomes.  Our attitudes and actions to this situation are key in this highly stressful time.  You control your own reaction to the situation.  Stay positive and level-headed.  
  • What to do if there is down time.  This is a perfect time to study your craft, arrange your tools, clean out the accumulated garbage in your work vehicle or trailer.  Read a book or hone your skills by watching "how to videos".  Another idea is to get that new website you've been putting-off or renew your insurance.  
  • Just because calls have slowed down doesn't mean you have to.  Remember, if homeowners are quarantined and are staying at home a large percentage of them will notice things that need to be repaired/replaced.  Also, the longer they stay put at home the more likely things will break.  Offer a "Once the Dust Settles I can Fix That" repair offer.  They'll love you for it and relieve stress knowing you will be there to help soon.
  • Let your customers know you do outdoor jobs.  This will alleviate any possible "social distancing" concerns, such as fencing, gutter cleaning, exterior painting, pressure washing, cleaning, trimming, cleanouts, etc.  Also, offer credit payments without having to handle checks, etc.  
  • Reassure your customers. Let your customers know about all of the precautions you're taking to help reduce the virus spread. Include any additional cleaning measures or staffing adjustments, and reassure them that you're safe to do business with.
  • Stay engaged with your social following. Since people will be staying at home, your social media channels will provide a captive audience opportunity. Use Social Posting and Scheduling regularly to keep followers engaged.  Ask them how things are going?  Show your compassionate side.
There are still things to do to better your handyman business during this downtime situation.  Just realize, there's nothing you can do to change local ordinances and the rules placed by your state governor.  As soon as these ordinances are lifted, you'll be ready to jump right in.
