High Quality Physical Education is at the Heart of a Whole School Approach to Developing Children's Physical Literacy | By Sport Australia
Sport Australia believes health and physical education (HPE) and a whole-of-school approach to physical literacy is crucial for the development of young Australians and getting Australia moving more often.
A strength-based approach: Students have the potential to be competent, confident, motivated and knowledgeable in movement, physical activity and sport.

It is obvious Australia has a pattern of increasing inactivity, increasing sedentary behaviours and increasing physical and mental health issues, particularly among young Australians. Whilst we must acknowledge the current state, we must also remind ourselves that physical literacy recognises that every individual has the potential to value movement, physical activity and sport, whilst developing and maintaining positive physical activity behaviours for life. Enhanced physical literacy also improves student wellbeing, learning, behaviour and academic attainment. Physically literate children undertake twice as much physical activity (Sport England, 2019) and the most effective interventions on cognitive development are those which combine physical effort with emotional and social challenge (Alvarez-Bueno et al, 2017).

National Sports Convention July 2019
- ACHPER will be there!
There is still time to register for Australia's largest sport, recreation and physical activity convention.
The annual event will be held from 23rd to 25th of July at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The 2019 program supports Sport 2030 plan and its focus on getting more Australians moving more often. The convention assists in building capability by delivering targeted sessions in the sport and physical activity areas.
ACHPER will have a presence at the Convention. As well as participating in session delivery, ACHPER will have a stand within the Peak Body Sports Hub. The Hub has been developed to allow delegates and expo attendees to connect with NSO's, SSO's and peak bodies.

Understanding learners' sense making of movement learning in physical education
In Volume 10 Issue 2, 2019 of the  Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education  Journal, Larsson and colleagues report on an investigation of movement learning from the perspective of learners. Rather than relying on external expertise to make judgements about movement learning, the study invited the participants to make sense of their own movement acquisition. The authors draw on the works of Ryle and Polanyi to proffer an analytic framework around notions of 'knowledge, awareness and articulation'.

Through this lens, they suggest that dominant assumptions about movement learning tend to offer restrictive, instrumental accounts of this process, whereas placing the learner at the centre invites approaches to movement pedagogy where greater emphasis is placed on varying the learning medium and developing a movement learning vocabulary.
