The new Federal Government
ACHPER CEO | John Stokes
In last month's Advocate, I spoke about the development of ACHPER's new National Position Statements. These statements will support ACHPER's advocacy strategy with the new Federal Government post 19 May. The five position statements are titled:
  • Physical Literacy & Quality HPE
  • HPE Curriculum Time Recommendation
  • Quality HPE in Primary Schools
  • Engaging External Providers for HPE Curriculum Implementation
  • Fitness Testing & Quality HPE
As a federated member based organisation, it is important that all Branches (States & Territories) are engaged in the process of reviewing and providing feedback on important matters like policy. On election weekend, ACHPER's National Representatives Forum meeting is being held. This forum allows the National Board and Branch representatives to come together, and agree on future strategies that will have a positive influence on the HPE sector.

The new Australian Student Wellbeing Framework - supporting HPE teachers

The Health and Physical Education curriculum provides a range of learning opportunities for students to develop the knowledge, understandings and skills needed to make healthy choices, strengthen their sense of self and respect for others, build their resilience and maintain positive relationships.

The new Australian Student Wellbeing Framework can be found on the Student Wellbeing Hub - an online space to support all teachers, and especially HPE teachers, to address significant focus areas essential to promoting student wellbeing and learning. You'll find a collection of free, age-appropriate and curriculum-aligned resources curated into wellbeing topics including: Healthy Minds and Bodies, Safe and Responsible Choices, and Building Positive Relationships to help you plan classroom lessons and activities. Discover free, self-paced, certificated courses to learn more about current best-practice approaches to drug and alcohol education, online safety, mental health and resilience, respectful relationships and a guide to incorporating elements of the Australian Student Wellbeing Framework in your teaching and learning plans. - studentwellbeinghub.edu.au

National Sports Convention July 2019 - ACHPER will be there!
Registration is now open for Australia's largest sport, recreation and physical activity convention.

The annual event will be held from 23rd to 25th of July at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The 2019 program supports Sport 2030 plan and its focus on getting more Australians moving more often. The convention assists in building capability by delivering targeted sessions in the sport and physical activity areas.

ACHPER will have a presence at the Convention. As well as participating in session delivery, ACHPER will have a stand within the Peak Body Sports Hub. The Hub has been developed to allow delegates and expo attendees to connect with NSO's, SSO's and peak bodies.

Visit the Convention website to obtain more information: www.nationalsportsconvention.com.au

Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education: Volume 10 Issue 2, 2019
Volume 10 Issue 2, 2019 of the Curriculum Studies in Health and Physical Education Journal has now been released.

ACHPER Members can log-in and browse the latest articles today, including a paper by Erik Backman, Phil Pearson & Gregory John Forrest titled  The value of movement content knowledge in the training of Australian PE teachers: perceptions of teacher educators.

In this paper Backman and colleagues report on a study into the ways movement content knowledge is positioned and practiced in the context of PETE programs. Seeking to move beyond the common binaries offered through the behavioural/technical and the social critical, the authors explore the epistemological foundations of how movement content knowledge is understood within PETE and its relationship with the formation of pedagogical content knowledge.

Following their analysis of seven PETE programs in NSW (Australia) they conclude that contemporary understandings of movement content knowledge continue to be narrowly defined and applied, and that the field would benefit from the inclusion of broader conceptualisations of movement.
